my friend has bowel cancer that has spread

Hello

This is my very first visit to this amazing forum. I have just found out that our wonderful brother in law has bowel cancer that has spread to his liver and abdomen! He now has a bag and needs to gain his strength before having 3 months of chemo,he has been told he has stage 4 cancer and that his liver is inoperable. He will see his oncologist in 2 weeks time when they hope to start his first course of chemo.

His surgeon has told him they really hope to give him a year, With this in mind and knowing that everyone is different,we are setting ourselves small goals for example a birthday party in the summer, a weekend away ,even a trip to Las Vegas, lol!

As you can imagine with the speed at which his bowel tumour grew from early Dec ( 4cms ) to early January the size of a grapefruit and the discovery that it has spread we are all still trying to let this news sink in.

Having read about such sad but brave, wonderful and inspiring  families with this awful disease, I hope I will also be able to pass on upbeat news when we know more.

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat Girlie64 although I'm sorry that your brother in law's bowel cancer has spread.

I can't imagine how difficult this news must be to take on board but it's great you're approaching this with a positive attitude. I've had a quick look through the forum and have found some members that are in a similar situation - [@alex34]‍, [@tigercub]‍, ‍ [@Cazbob]‍ and [@suzy10]‍ - so fingers crossed they'll pop by when they can for a chat now I've mentioned them in this post.

I hope the treatment is able to give him as much time as possible.

    Best wishes to you all,

  • Thanks so much for saying hello Steph, it’s much appreciated. We are going to see him this weekend, a short 800 mile round trip but it will be worth it. Thanks again for your encouraging words

Hi my partner was dignosed with colon and liver cancer last June,we were told he was inoperable too,and it felt like my world had ended as we have a four year old son,he had his bag fitted and then started on a corse of chemo,it was six weeks but not consecutive as his pic line got infected,he came out in a rash but anyway after his lot had finished the re scanned him, his tuma in the colon was 9 and a half cm long,he had 11 spots to his liver, his tuma in the colon is now 4cm and he only has 3 spots on the liver the biggest spot was 4 cm it’s now 1 and a half cm and they are now talk about an operation we find out on Tuesday,it’s been a hard year for us all,he was so good on the chemo too. I hope this has helped a little,we thought we didn’t have long left,so we made every milestone a special one,he even had a party, and we raised £1000 for our centenary wing.good luck with everything xx
