Help....

Hi

I was diagnosed with 2 malignant and 1 benign tumor in my right breast just prior to Christmas.  I had a lumpectomy and sentinel node removal on the 28th of December and the surgery went well, however, I have been totally shocked about the amount of bruising and swelling I have had.  I have been back to the hospital to have the dressing removed last Thursday and was given the really good news that the surgeon got clear margins so no further surgery is required, I know I have been very lucky.  However, the nurses were a little surprised at the bruising and have said that the radiotherapy that I need will have to be delayed until it goes down.  Well I am now a week further on and although the color is changing daily the swelling is not going down at all, in fact, I think it is getting bigger and is starting to pull at the wound which although is not weeping is certainly a little wider than it was.  My question really is has anybody any idea what I can do to try and alleviate the swelling? and is this more common than I know? everything I read glibly says one or two days following lumpectomy you should feel fine and be able to get on with things - I cannot even get most of my clothes on.  I am taking arnica tablets and ibuprofen to help although I am thinking I may contact the hospital today I don't want to waste anyones time if this is quite normal.

Thanks in advance

DebiL

  • hi

Sorry to hear your news..when i first had my lumpectomy done on both of my breasts my mum used to do very gentle massages and cold (not too cold) packs to alleviate swelling. It kind helped me but then every person is different so I don’t know how much that’ll help you. the surgeon normally explains what side effects you might get following  surgery but speak to a professional if you are concerned please don’t t think you’re wasting their time they are there to help you. Good luck with your future treatments

  • Thanks - I did think about trying cold packs to see if it helps maybe i will give that a go

  • Hi

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis.

I had a lumpectomy too in Nov-I still have swelling and a bit of pain. The Nurse had advised me to to use a hot pack and light massage with coconut oil which has helped to some extent. I am not bothered about the swelling and pain as I am going to have a Mastectomy next week.

It is always better to check with your nurse if it is just the after effect of the surgery or not. They are well experienced in these matters.

    Good luck!

  • Thanks, Radley

As it turns out I was right to be a little concerned as shortly after writing I had a shower and my breast started bleeding having now spent the last couple of days in and out of hospital it seems I had a very large hematoma which found the path of least resistance.  It was like a murder scene but I felt instant relief, I now have a drain fitted to get rid of the rest of it and am on antibiotics.  I cannot tell you how much better I feel.  Nature has a funny way of making things right.

I hope all goes well with your Mastectomy next week

    All the best

    Hi DebiL,

I am so glad to hear of your relief now that you have the drain fitted.

If ever you have any trouble, don't hesitate to let your breast care nurses know and, ask their advice. They are there to reassure us breast care ladies and gents and to keep us on the right path.

I hope that everything settles soon and, that you can start radiotherapy without delay.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi DebiL

Good to know that your pain had settled after the haematoma was drained.Hope all is now well for you.

I had my surgery last week and am getting better although niggly pains are still there whenever I move my arm hope it will settle soon.

Have an appointment with the Surgeon in 2 weeks time for the results -that is something which I dread but have decided not to think about it until the appointment.

    Regards

    Radley

  • Hi DebiL, I am just wondering how you are feeling now that you have had your breast drained? Please let us know when you get a chance. Kind regards, Jolamine xx
