Recovering from Radical Hysterectomy for Cervical Cancer

Hi. I'm new to the site (and have never been on a site like this before so I'm not sure how it works). I recently found out I had cervical cancer. About 6 weeks ago (12 November) I had a radical hystorectomy and removal of 12 lymph nodes. Overies were not removed. I've been having a hard time lately with bad pain in my legs, pubic area and tummy. Also I am so emotional and teary all the time. I've been for a check up and the doc says I'm healing fine but I'd like to know if other people have been through the same things. Can anyone please give me some advice. Thank you.

  • Hello bobbygirl,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I am sorry to hear about your recent cervical cancer diagnosis and I hope you are recovering well after the radical hysterectomy. You have been through a lot and it isn't susprising that you are feeling like it is all hurting at the moment both on a physical and emotional level.

It's good news that the doctor said you are healing fine. You have come to the right place to talk to others who have been through this before and who will understand exactly how you are feeling at the moment. For example, we have this thread on our forum where some of our members have been sharing recovery stories following a hysterectomy. Amongst these, I noticed that [@sandykcc]‍ mentioned back in March that she had a radical hysterectomy for cervical cancer so hopefully she will drop by and tell you how well she has recovered from it and what her experience was like at the time. I thought I would also try and connect you with [@sharon31]‍ - you can find her thread here and I noticed she was looking to chat to others like yourself who have had a radical hysterectomy for cervical cancer. Don't hesitate to post on her thread too if you wish  - you will find there also the lovely [@LauraP]‍ who although she didn't have the hysterectomy herself has had cervical cancer in the past and would be another great - and inspirational - person for you to talk to.

I hope this helps you a little. If you ever needed to ask anything to our cancer nurses, you can ring them on this free number 0808 800 4040 - Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

Keep in touch bobbygirl and let us know how you get on. You're not alone here and I hope you will hear from other ladies who have been affected by cervical cancer.

    Best wishes,

    Lucie, Cancer Chat Moderator

  • Hi Bobbygirl,

I am sorry to hear you are going through this right now. I had stage 2A cervical cancer in 2012 with chemo and internal/external radiation. As Moderator Lucie said, I did not have a hysterectomy, due to complications. But, I do understand the emotional side effects this cancer has on us. It is normal to be teary and emotional because you are dealing with a lot right now.  It will get better. Keep track of how your body feels (because you have to be your own best advocate) but also listen to the doctors if they say you are healing. Try to take it one day, one appointment at a time and if the aches and pains get to be too much, make sure to keep after the doctor about them so he can help make sure you feel comfortable.

Let us know how you are doing and if you have any questions.  I'll be thinking of you.

    Laura x

  • Hi I'm going they very similar to you. Like you I found out 2nd Dec i have squamous cell cervical cancer stage 1b1.Had results from scans yesterday which are clear and I am booked in for a radical hysterectomy on 22nd Jan,not removing ovaries. How are u coping now your at home? Did u stay in hospital long? I've been told I will be  going home with a catheter for a week,is this what u have??? Are u getting pains in legs/pelvis now or was this before??? I get left side pains in thigh, knee ,pelvis and groin area.Ct and mri show no spread to lymph nodes but I'm still worried.

  • Hello

i also had a radical hysterectomy on 22 December via abdominal incision. I had my ovaries and lymph nodes removed too. I’m pretty much bed bound and really struggle to do anything which is a huge shock after being so active before the operation. I’m just hoping I don’t need chemo radiation

How’re you recovering? Are you making progress?

    Best wishes xx
