University student having thyroid cancer treatment

Hi there,

I’m new to this forum. Diagnosed with follicular thyroid cancer about 3 months ago. I have had 2 surgeries to remove my thyroid and having radioiodine in a weeks time.

I am in my second year of uni and all of this has luckily fit quite well around my studies. Although I know it’s fairly common, I haven’t met anyone who’s had thyroid cancer so just wondering if there are other people at university or of a similar age (I’m 19) going through the same thing.

Best wishes x

  • Hi Unistudent,

I was diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer in August this year. I'm 28 and had no symptoms (only looked pale and face got thin) and 'normal' bloodwork. I had half of my thyroid removed as had 1 nodule on left side. Won't need treatment but I know someone currently having the rai treatment (he's a man too). Doing quite well with it.. just annoying having to be isolated with it.

  • Hi Hoof1,

Thanks for getting in touch, nice to hear from someone else who’s had the same thing. Do you happen to know how long it took the guy you mentioned to recover after rai? I’m expecting to feel 100% 2 days after but perhaps that’s unrealistic, I’m not sure. Great to hear he’s doing well with it though and that you don’t need rai.

  • Hey only seeing your reply now. So many posts on this forum.

I'm not too sure how long it took him to recover. He had to spray his throat before he ate as it was tender. How is rai going?

  • Hi Hoof

rai went really well thanks and the scan confirmed I am officially cancer-free!! :)

I was only in over night and watched loads of films and then just before I was about to be discharged home Jack Whitehall and his family were visiting the ward (because it was a few days before Christmas) so I saw him which was cool. All in all the whole experience was pretty pleasant considering.

    I hope you’re doing well!!

    All my best :)
