Newly Diagnosed with not one but two cancers on the same day

Hi all,

my name is Suzi or Gwaunain as l as wet to both! Anyway l already have some quite serious health issues but l manage or should l say managed. I found a huge lump in my groin back in late September presented to my GP as l have been out of kilter for sometime most of the issues fitted nicely under the pre-existing conditions however finding the lump changed the game somewhat! I have had ultrasound , x-rays,MRI rapid infusion cat scan and then a biopsy on 1st November. Yesterday l received my diagnosis which although l knew in my heart of hearts still came as a shock. Not because l had one type of lymphoma cancer but two! I have a low grade lymphoma probably non Hodgkin’s lymphoma which has decided to change into an aggressive lymphoma l have to have a pet scan this coming week to stage the cancer they know it is above and below my diaphragm which means a minimum stage 3 possibly higher. I will begin an aggressive course of 6 rounds of chemotherapy beginning the 19th December!

I am looking for advice on how best to deal with Chemotherapy how best l can help myself and my family understand what happens next and how to make the most of the time l am up to doing anything more than sleep!

l am on morphine SR 90mg with oromorph as and when needed also take gabapentin as to top this l am disabled due to spinal stenosis with widespread myelopathy.

I look forward to hearing your highs downs and successes as it’s know we are not alone in this journey no one seams to understand except someone who has been through it!

  • Hello Gwaunain and welcome to the forum.  I am sorry to learn that you have been dropped into this situation.  So much happening at once.  Let me say at the outset that I have not had cancer myself but have cared for family and friends who have.  I am partly responding to bring your post back on to the front page; I think because your post was written just after midnight by the time most of the regulars got to reading posts lots more had come in after yours!     I hope it doesn't make you feel too bad over Christmas but of course the priority is get you started on it.  I am attaching a link to information about chemotherapy on this site which may be useful to you and I hope others will give you their own insights.  Annie

  • hi Annie

thanks for your reply. I note you say you have attached info on Chemotherapy, maybe it’s me or l am a total technophobe with dissociative blindnes with a perpencity to run her mouth off!

Can you point me in right direction lass

    thanks

    Suzi

  • Hi Gwaunain,

I am so sorry to read you post. I am new here and not entirely sure I have anything useful to say!.

I understand that chemo affects everyone differently but i found these worked for my Mum. When I cared for my Mum she found ginger anything (particulary biscuits or ginger sweets or crystalline ginger things) helped with any dry mouth / nasusea. She liked the pressure point wrist things you can get for seasickness, V8 fruit juice helped her too massively too.  Also planning something really nice the day before chemo etc or anytime when feeling  well. Load up on films, books, podcats, new music anything you love to do usually. Remember to communicate with family - its OK to say "i want to be alone" or whatever or however you feel. During this time it is about you, and you solely

Thinking of you my lovely xx

  • thank you confussed

l take some weirdo meds already and crystallised hot firey ginger by whitworths is a go to for many things from dry mouth to upset tummies!

I see the oncolocy nurses tomorrow to get all the info required then.

i am an avid knitted and crochet fiend hopefully l will still be able to do these as at the moment l either can’t sleep or can sleep the whole day away! I have a few talking books down loaded to listen to if that’s all l can do and if all else fails l will play mindless video games!!

    thanks for your suggestions

    catch you soon

  • I am so sorry for messing you around; it was me not you - a combination of technical problems and household issues seem to have overwhelmed my little brain.  I attach the information now.  Annie

I am at stage 3 possibly 4 a Pet Scan next Wednesday will show exactly the stage and will show if any cancer in  lymphatic organs.

  • Gwaunain, I have just joined the forum, and am worried sick with my symptoms.  I have been reading through other posts and came across yours. I hope that you got through Christmas ok, I just about managed but my nerves are in shreds.  Have you had the results from your scan? Thinking of you. xx

  • Hi Christmas2018,

l thank you for having me in your thoughts it is the simplest of acts from strangers that show the most genuine emphathy and compassion!

l was rushed into hospital on 18th December with pneumonia! I was not going to have my first Chemo on the 19th that was for certain! I was bombarded with antibiotics both orally and intravenously it worked! So l have my first chemo session on 27th December this meant l had spent Christmas in hospital( thankful but soul destroying) and discharged the following day! I am now 5 days in and awaiting the drop that is supposed to happen in the next day or two!

My symptoms were quite innocuous until a huge tumour appeared!  I have disabling preconditions so probably didn’t pic up the fine nouances of Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. and so it carried on growing and growing.

please do not sit on symptoms take a deap breathe and go see your GP! Then come back and let us help You  whatever the need!

Pet Scan was very revealing! I am at stage 3/4 and this cancer has not invaded my bone marrow which be a ***!

you are in my thoughts and prayers.

    Sue xxx
