surgery

Hello Group,

I'm Em, just finished my chemo and I'm due to have surgery in December. Mastectomy.. Maybe double. Can anyone kindly offer me any advice? I'm due to meet my surgeon on Tuesday, but I'm not sure what questions to ask or what I'm going to be facing, apart from more horrendous months ahead, change and upset..i hope this makes sense.

thank you

Em xx

  • Hi Em

I had my mastectomy on Wednesday.

It's difficult to think straight and get some questions sorted isn't it? I saw my surgeon along with the breast cancer nurse. I found it easier to split my questions up directing any about the operation itself to the surgeon and speaking more in depth about recovery, pain management etc to the nurse afterwards. My nurse has always stayed with me after the surgeon's gone to carry on talking with me. Surgeons are always short of time I think.

I did feel originally that both nurse and surgeon were telling me only the bare minimum and I wanted to know a lot of the nuts and bolts involved. Once I made that clear they were both happy to go into as much detail as I needed. I think lots of ladies in our position don't want to know too much at all.

Do you know what is the deciding factor in your case that is the difference between a single or double mastectomy?  And when will that decision be made? Maybe talk about that and things like the length if the op etc. Also do you know if you'll be having further treatment after surgery?

I'm in another "waiting" phase now. I'm seeing my surgeon on Tuesday to check the wound and then it's waiting for the pathology results to come back before I move on to further treatment.  But I'm concentrating on healing right now.  One day at a time.
