My 3rd year living with cancer

Hi, I'm john, 63 and diagnosed with bladder cancer 3 years ago. Removed and had 1 treatment of chemo. Now 2.5 years later the cancer has returned and is more aggresive. I started a 6 week BCG treatment program and after 2 weeks was diagnosed with shingles so the surgeon stopped treatment for 2 weeks during which time I also undwerwent a cardio angiogram. Back on the BCG now and treatment 3 after effects seemed to have resulted in my urunating out most of my bladder lining which took a while and was very painful. With treatment 4, there were no effects accept being very tired. I did drink a lot more than usual after the BCG. Strangely I'm also putting on weight.

My dad died of bone cancer but treatment today seems a lot more advanced and pro-active.

I am interested in understanding and discussing the symptoms others have had progressively after each BCG treatment. My surgeon has advised this could go on monthly for 3-5 years. I really hate the process and initial 5 minutes the BCG is inserted but have not had any discomfort during the two hours the BCG is in the bladder. I find the after effects kick in after 2-3 hours but by the following morning I'm pretty much ok accept having to urinate more than usual.

I take two satchets of Ural twice a day for the first few days after the BCG and this seems to control any infection.

  • Hello Comptj.

Welcome to the forum although I'm sorry to hear that your cancer has returned and that you've also had shingles.

We do have some information about the after effects of BCG bladder treatment which may be of interest to you. You might also like to have a look through the forum using the search function for bladder cancer or BCG (click on the magnifying glass in the blue bar towards the top of this page). There are a number of posts that you may find interesting to read through and hopefully be able to connect with others who have had similar treatment.

Do keep in touch and let us know how you are getting on.

    Best wishes,
