hi my names john just been told i got cancer im scared

Hi I'm john age 66 just been told got cancer and I'm scared out my head

  •  Hi John and welcome to the forum.  I can well imagine it is incredibly scary for you - the big C word just completely turns everything on its head doesn’t it ? What support have you got? Have you told family and friends? If so, take someone along to your appointments if you can. Two sets of ears are better than one and make sure you ask all the questions you want answers to. Your medical team may not be able to answer them completely for you but they may be able to reassure you.

There are loads and loads of people on here who will help you get your head round what is coming your way in terms of treatment, side-effects, where to get the best information, all manner of excellent advice. But if you could give us a little more information about what type of cancer, what your symptoms are, what the doctor said etc you will get a far more specific response.

Most people find that once a treatment plan is in place things tend to calm down a little, your mind has had time to accept what you have been told and you are less panicky.  Try not to dwell too much  on the future, one day at a time. Oh, and stay off the Internet. Marie Curie, Macmillan and cancer research are all excellent, well researched sources of information. So many of the other websites are enough to tip you over the edge!

Breathe! Take one step at a time, one day at a time and try and get some rest.

  • Hello John, I was born in 1952 also.  Sorry you have had bad news.  Have you been given much detail about your cancer yet?  As Ruth has said tell the people who care for you - things seem a bit better when you have support around you.  Try not to panic - get all the information about the stage of your cancer and the treatment being recommended.  You are very welcome to come and chat with us at any time - just to say how you are feeling or to let off steam.  Annie

  • Thankyou annie just waiting for letter my family are here for me but loads things going through my head this so scary

  • I had camara down my throat was told I had cancer in my gullet that all I know at moi am in peace's don't know were my head ismy family are there for me but iim fighting it in my head thankyou for your help

  • Hi John, firstly as everyone is saying there is lots of support for this my husband John was diagnosed with cancer and we felt helpless but thanks to forums like these there are plenty of people there to support and advise. You’re not alone or on your own that you can be sure of and the medical staff are tremendous and remember we are all individuals so what may be said about one person may not be true for another so live each day to the full and don’t let this diagnosis take over!,,

  • Best of luck John,

I'm 70 and was diagnosed with bowel cancer 6 weeks ago, had surgery almost immediately.

It was a bad couple of weeks but it is just a bad memory now, I started chemo yesterday and it went a lot better than I anticipated.

Funny, my fear was all about the procedures, the actually cancer scare did not seem to sink in.

You're in good hands, just take it easy, there's plenty of others happy to do the worrying for you.

  •  Hi John, I think that is the same cancer as my husband although his is called oesophageal cancer but I think gullet cancer and oesophageal cancer are pretty much the same thing.  The good news is, depending on the stage you’re cancer has been caught at, oesophageal cancer is curable. @davek  on this forum is  The poster boy for this kind of cancer – he has been living with it for several years.  My husband and I also have friends who are three, six and 18 years post oesophageal cancer Op and all doing really well.   Try to take one day at a time, lean on your family and your friends on this forum and take good care of yourself.

  • Hi John,

    Welcome to Cancer Chat.

That story sounds very familiar. I was diagnosed with Oesophageal cancer in late 2013 after it was discovered during an endoscopy. Before then everyone thought I probably had a stomach ulcer, so it was a complete shock.

Your head is probably all over the place at the moment but don't hesitate to post any questions you have.

    Good luck

    Dave

  • Hithankyou all for being so helpfull I am little at ease its mostly at night I have trouble sleeping have put telly on watch a film or two till fal sleep hope you all get better with gods speed

  • Yes, the long hours of the night can be difficult but you are doing the right thing.  Don't lie in bed tossing, turning and worrying.  There is no law that says you have to sleep (or try to sleep) through the night.  Do whatever gets you through this  best.  Good on you.  Annie
