Who to see about a breast lump

Hello

Firstly thank you for taking the time to read my post.

As mentioned on this forum a few weeks ago, I have felt a small lump / thickening in my left breast. It is about the size of a 20p coin and is more noticeable when I am due my period. I believe it is hormone related, however I am due to book an appointment with my GP soon.

All doctors at my practice are male, I personally don't have an issue being examined by a male doctor, however I am unsure if I should book an appointment to see the female nurse instead due to it appearing to be hormone related.

Please could someone give me some guidance. I know it may sound silly - I'm 23 years old and have not been in this position before, therefore I don't know what is best.

Many thanks in advance

  • Hi there ..

Firstly let me say 9 out of ten lumps are fine and not cancer ... it is very rare at your young age ..not impossible but rare ... so the odds are well in your favour...

If I were you I'd call the surgery. . And ask receptionist about where to go to see a lady Dr. . They must have come across other women, wanting a lady Dr for personal issues .. maybe later change surgeries to one with both sex's ... I know I feel more comfortable on these examinations with a lady ..

Although good odds .. every lump should be looked at .. let us know how you go ...Chrissie x

    Hi Rbanon,

If you don't have any problem with seeing a male doctor, you should book an appointment with one straight away. If you see the nurse and she suspects anything, she would get you to see one of the doctors so that they can refer you to a breast clinic.

Chrissie gives good advice if you don't want to see a male doctor, but this is likely to delay things further. If it is something untoward, the sooner it is seen to the better.

I sincerely hope that it turns out to be insifnificant, but best to get it checked out anyway.

Please stay in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
