Breast clinic

hi all , I have just come back from gp after I have suffered breast soreness for a month , the go as discovered a lump on right breast , he stated not muscle but a hard lump and has referred my to clinic , what do I expect now ? Very worried

  • Hi jemmy, I can totally understand it’s a worrying time.

At the breast clinic you can expect a number of tests depending on your age and situation.

You may have a mammogram and ultrasound scan (like when you’re pregnant). The scans may show up benign conditions like a cyst or fibroadenima. If the scans are inconclusive you may have biopsies taken during your ultrasound...not painful as they give a little local anaesthetic. (If you have biopsies taken there’s normally a further wait of up to 2 weeks to get the results.

Finally, in my case anyway, I saw a doctor for a physical examination and summary of what had been done and next steps/when to expect results.

The rests you have may vary though, as may the order of them.

As has often been pointed out on this forum, the vast majority of lumps are benign so try not to worry, but from personal experience I recommend keeping busy and taking a friend along to get your results x

    Hi Jemmy,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

Mrs Fingers has outlined what to expect on your first visit to the breast clinic. You are usually seen at the clinic within 2 weeks. Many expect to get told whether or not they have cancer at their first consultation. Unfortunately, this hardly ever happens. It is not until your consultant has got the results of your tests that s/he can be certain and ready to give you a diagnosis. It usually takes about a week to get these results.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
