Dcis

Hi my name is jan I am 46 years old, I was diagnosed with dcis in may 2018 I was told I would need an operation to move the calcifications after surgery I had to wait for my results I was told in most cases I might need to go back to theatre for some more to be taken as they like a clear margin. When returning to hospital for my results I was hit with the news as it was best to have a mastectomy I was in total shock on the 5th July I had my mastectomy and I had a expander  put in at the same time as I was having a reconstruction all went well and I couldn’t believe I had no pain just waiting now till I get the expander out and have my implant in. Has anyone else experienced the same?

    Hi Jan,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm not at all surprised that you got such a shock when you went back to get your results. There's quite a difference between taking a little more tissue and needing a mastectomy, but I'm glad to hear that all has gone well.

I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer. The first was diagnosed 8 years ago and I had a lumpectomy. At the time pathology said that the surgeon didn't get a clear enough margin, but my surgeon claimed that he had realised this at the tme and had taken more away. A year later I found another lump in the same breast and had a double mastectomy. Due to previous surgeries, I could not have reconstruction, so I have just made do with my prostheses.

I found that the mastectomies were less painful than the lumpectomy, much to my surprize. I hope that all continues to go well for you as you get your expander out and have your implant in. Please keep in touch and let us know how it goes. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
