Husband Newly Diagnosed Stage 4 Lung Cancer

I am still reeling in shock after we were told the news under a week ago that my 61 year old husband has stage 4 lung cancer. The cancer is in both lungs and has spread to lymph nodes in his chest. He is due to have an EBUS procedure in 3 days time to find out whether it is Small Cell Cancer on Non Small Cell Cancer.  We were told that due to staging of cancer from CT scan surgery and radiotherapy would not be an option.  Dependent upon the results of the EBUS he may be considered for chemotherapy.

He quit smoking 6 years ago and has COPD.  He regularly visits his GP to check on his lung disease and we cannot understand why his cancer has only just been discovered and at such a late stage.  He was having repeated chest infections in early part of this year and after third prescription for anti-biotics and still not feeling "quite right" we asked for a chest x-ray.  I could not believe what we were hearing when being told by the consultant that not only was cancer widely spread in his left lung but had spread to right and metastasised into his central chest area into lymph nodes.  They said without treatment his prognosis was 2 - 4 months! Any shared experiences or advice would be dearly appreciated as we are still trying to understand how fast this all appears to be happening.

Thank you.

  • Hello Ditzee and welcome.

I am sorry to hear of your husband's lung cancer diagnosis and know only too well how you must be feeling. My late husband was diagnosed aged 61 with NSCLC with invasion to chest wall and heart valves. We were given a prognosis of 9-12 months and the only treatment was palliative radiotherapy just 4 consecutive daily blasts to try and stem the growth of the tumour and give him a reasonable quality of life.

He was also an ex smoker, he stopped 6 years before when he was diagnosed with COPD. He used to have regular lung function tests as well and I have often thought that something was overlooked.

As your husband is being considered for chemotherapy please don't give up hope. Carole who writes a daily blog on here cares for her hubby who was diagnosed nearly 18 months ago with incurable lung cancer. He has had chemotherapy and radiotherapy and is living as near a normal life as is possible. Caz07 Stay strong.

When you find out what type of lung cancer etc. things will be a bit clearer and you will know then what you are dealing with.

I am sending kind regards to yourself and your husband .

    Lynne.

  • Thank you Lynne for your lovely reply.  I am so sorry to hear that you lost your dear husband.  As you say, your circumstances exactly mirror our situation.  Until we get the results of his biopsy from the EBUS we will not know any details regarding chemotherapy treatment.  The consultant team seemed to rule out surgery and radiotherapy after the CT results.  We are hoping that they will have the results by the end of the month and can then meet with the oncologist to discuss treatment.

I will read Carole's blog as mentioned and thank you again for the prompt reply.  I have a feeling that this forum is going to be of great help and support for my husband and myself.

    Take care

    Ditzee
