Side Effect

Hi everyone!

Juts had my second chemotherapy a week ago and just noticed that my tongue is black, is this another side effect during chemotherapy. Is there anyone who had this.

  • I have never had chemotherapy but on noticing that you have not yet had any replies yet I typed the word "chemotherapy" and "black tongue" onto my search engine and - my goodness - there were loads of people talking about the phenomenon.    I was trying to use the Search function on Cancer Research UK but am having trouble using it.  However one of the things I came across on the internet was a discussion from MacMillan Cancer Support.  Admittedly it was three years ago but it is probably still relevant.  It talks of a "black or hairy tongue".  I am enclosing a link to it.

Sorry this is a bit disjointed but I thought I would respond to you with such information as I have been able to find.  Hopefully more will follow and you get some more useful knowledge.  Annie

  • Hi,

The best bet is to phone your contact on the care team (usually a named nurse) about this. No-one on here is qualified to make a diagnosis and there are literally hundreds of chemo drugs, all with different side effects.

That said, black or blue tongue pigmentation seems to be a fairly common and short term side effect of several chemo drugs.

    Best wishes
