HI. I am a 47 year old newly qualified midwife.
Last smear 2016. I had an ablation in Feb 2017 for heavy periods (no bleeding between periods) and since then I have had spotting and bleeding between periods and after sex and my periods were still heavy. In August my GP referred me to gynae but there was an 8 month waiting list. I did ask for some kind of examination in order to rule out a sinister cause but she refused, stating it was simply a failed ablation and needed a routine referral to gynae only. She prescribed the mini pill but it has made no difference to the frequency of bleeding but has made my periods lighter. I saw my gynae on April 20th and she is doing a hysterectomy on July 3rd.
I have also been suffering repeated UTIs and cystitis and am now on prophylactic antibiotics. I have recently read that urinary symptoms can be a sign of cervical cancer and I am even more convinced I should have had some kind of examination. I have convinced myself they will find cancer when they do the hysterectomy (is pathology automatically carried out on the removed organs?). 9 days to go until my op and I am anxious to get it done as I want the worry removed (everything is being removed) but I am worried about what next if they find cancer.
I am due to start a new job which will be delayed to allow for recovery from my op but will cancer mean further delay or loss of job. The job is 90 minutes away so I will be living away from my husband and children (15 and 19) during work days. Obviously medical treatment and work will have to be organised around each other. Time is passing so slowly because I just want the day to come and I am worrying about cancer and its impact on my life.
