Fibroadenomas

Hi everyone,

I just want to start by saying I’m unsure if this is even the right website to talk about this on, because fortunately I was lucky enough to not be diagnosed with cancer - but I’m looking for advice if anyone has had anything similar. Secondly I want to say how incredible and brave everyone on here is!

Okay, now to the point. I’m 22 and I had my appointment at the breast clinic yesterday because I found a lump in my left breast and it was sore. So after having a consultation and ultrasound I was told I have multiple fibroadenomas in each breast. I’ve had 2 of these lumps in my right breast since I was about 17/18 and it turns out they want to remove those 2 as they are 5cm and 3cm. (Funny how I went about my left breast and it’s my right one that’s causing problems!)

So, to wind up my long post I just wanted to know of anyone’s experiences on fibroadenoma removal? Was it painful etc? Thank you for any info or advice

  • How did it go Sav?

I have my tests in 2 weeks and I nervous. Did you go with someone? My sister has breast cancer so I don't want to tell anyone about my tests as everyone is stressed as it is.

  • Hi,

Looking advice regarding multiple fibroadenomas. Previous fibroadenomas biopsied and eventually removed. I have had more fibroadenomas post surgery. During my latest appointment 2new lumps were discovered, however no tests were performed on these. It is now assumed new lumps are fibroadenomas based on ultrasound findings. It is making me feel a bit uneasy not having these new lumps biopsied. Has anyone here any advice? Or has anyone had a cancer diagnosis after a history of fibroadenomas? Do people believe all lumps should be tested or should I put my trust in consultant. Your help would be appreciated.

  • Hi Caroline,

From the best of my knowledge, fibroadenomas are quite easily diagnosed from ultrasound alone so it is very possible that your 2 new lumps are indeed fibroadenomas. A lot of people would feel comfortable with this alone but I think as you don’t, which is completely understandable, then perhaps push for a biopsy for peace of mind :)

  • Hi Beachbabe,

your story sounds very similar to mine.

I had mammogram, ultrasound and biopsies just over two weeks ago and was told I had a Fibroadenoma. Was given the leaflet and told to come back in June to check on the size of it etc. However last Monday I had a call to say that the biopsies were back and it wasn’t a Fibroadenoma and they were querying fibromatosis. They asked me to go to clinic on Friday instead of June. I saw the consultant. He said there’s no signs of cancer at all and that the lump is benign and fibrous but they’re not sure what type of lump it is. I now have surgery on 5th June.

What I’d like to ask is what we’re you told when you had your biopsies back? Did they say inconclusive? Or did they have some idea what it was?

    Sorry for all the questions

    Marie xxx

  • Please don’t be sorry. Ask anything you want.

I was told inconclusive “didn’t think cancer” but couldn’t be 100% sure so best get lump out. Which was done two and a half weeks later. Definitely think better out least then they know exactly what it is then to leave it and wait. The waiting is the worse part. I guess your having a lumpectomy on 5th June? If so get yourself a sports bra that’s the advise I was given and so glad I was. If you want anymore help please just ask x

  • Thank you for your reply!

Yes I have a lumpectomy on 5th June. I was also offered 29th May but it’s school holidays and as a single mum I may have struggled so opted for the second option.

Move heard about the sports bras! I hear m and s do some lovely ones. I’ll be heading there before my op.:-)

Were you a long time off work? I’ve been told a good two  weeks due to my job xxx

  • Yes m and s I wore mine night and day to start with. I had 3 weeks off work as I had two lumps and second lump was quite deep. Then had 6 weeks on light duties. I work in a supermarket x

  • I work in a secure mental hospital so I’m guessing I’ll need a good couple of weeks off due to the nature of the job.

I have a bad habit of thinking I’m super woman and with my biopsies I did things way too soon- was back in work the day after having three, was carrying my granddaughter two days later  and now,two and a half weeks later I’m still a little sore. I will learn!

I’ll be listening to my body after the op and if I need to rest I’ll be doing it for sure! I got my letter confirming my op date this morning -7 weeks and 1 day away! It feels so long away but I’m sure it’ll come around pretty quick xxx

  • Definitely need to listen to your body! I slept quite a bit the days following which isn’t a bad thing. The body heals more when resting!! I cut my grass one handed after two weeks then wished I hadn’t!! Took a good few weeks to feel 100% again the outside looked fine it’s the inside that takes the time and more you move and pull the longer it will take! X
