Waiting for biopsy results

Hi

just joined the group. So stressed as awaiting results. Is there anyone also having the same problems

  • I know how you feel. I had a wide excision and biopsy on 25th March. The waiting is horribleHopefully it won’t be much longer for both of us

    Hi David,

Waiting for results is one of the scariest part of our cancer journeys and, I bet that 2-4 weeks seems like forever to you at the moment. Try to distract yourself by keeping busy.

I hope that all goes well with your reesults. Please update us with the outcome when you hear it. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hii

i have found a lump in my neck, which they have taken fluid from, said it was red/brown colour which meant something was not right. Didn’t tell me any more and got to wait 14 days for results.

Has any had this test done and if so when did you get your results as the waiting is making me ill and does the colour make a difference.

    many thanks candy.lou

    HI Candy.lou,

Welcome to our forum, although I'm sorry to hear why you have joined us.

Waiting on results is always a scary time. there are so many unknowns that we all tend to think the worst. Fortunately this seldom turns out to be the case. Most people seem to get their results back in 1-2 weeks. I agree that the waiting is purgatory, but we've all got to go through it.

I don't know whether or not the colour makes any difference, as I am not familiar with this type of cancer - I myself have had 2 bouts of breast cancer over the past 10 years. If you are worried about thecolour, why not phone the nurses on this site? Their number is 0808 800 4040 and you can reach them from 9-5 Monday - Friday.

Have you arranged to take someone with you to your appointment? This is always a good idea.

I hope that the news is good when you get it. Please stay in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hello,

I know that this is an old thread but I was wondering if anyone can help me. My mum has been to the breast clinic and had the mammogram, ultrasound and biopsy of the lump she found, which turned out to be a rather large lymph node. She has had breast cancer once before, 16 years ago, and has been clear ever since. The consultant was almost 100% sure this was cancer and said that the biopsy results we are due to get this Thursday will determine where it has come from and we can then go forward with treatment options. This morning, my mum has received a letter from the hospital to say she is on the waiting list for an outpatient appointment in the general surgery department. Is this what normally happens before receiving a biopsy result? Surgery and/or chemotherapy was mentioned in the initial appointment last week but to be honest that was such a blur due to shock and stress.
    thank you for reading. Xx

    Hi Roo,

I am sorry to hear that your mum has had to face cancer again after 16 years. It will probably depend upon the protocols and waiting times in your area. Most people are seen 1-2 weeks after their first visit to get the results of any tests that were taken. They are usually seen by the same consultant who saw them in the first place.

It might be worth phoning your mum’s breast care nurse to ask why she has been referred to general surgery. They are usually very helpful. Most of us have to have surgery if cancer is diagnosed. Whether or not we need chemo will depend on the type of cancer, the extent of it and the type of surgery we have.

I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer too. I had a lumpectomy first time around. That was 10 years ago and I had a second bout 9 years ago, when I had a double mastectomy.

I hope that all goes well for your mum. This is always a worrying time, so try to give her all the support that you can. Are you able to accompany her to all of her appointments? This makes such a difference.

Please keep in touch and let us know how she gets on. We are always here for you both.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Jolamine,

thank you so much for your reply. I have been following your posts for the past week whilst waiting for appointments and I just wanted to say what an amazingly strong lady you are.
Mum discovered a lump in her armpit last week, when we went to the breast clinic nothing showed up on her mammogram or ultrasound of the breast but the ultrasound of the lump (which is a lymph node) didn't look great so it's a worry where this has come from.

mum had a mastectomy and lymph node removal 16 years ago, this has been a complete shock to the system. I was very young when she was first diagnosed but now that I am older I have been and will be going to all appointments with her. She is a very strong lady like yourself and I'm sure whatever the results are on Thursday we can get through it as a family.

thank you so much for your reply, your posts and stories truly are inspirational and have given me some strength throughout this process (again!) xx

    Hi Roo,

I'm glad to hear that my posts have helped you in some small way. My mum had breast cancer for 12 years before she developed secondary breast cancer, where it had spread to her brain, bones, liver and lungs. I know just how hard it was to support her and, I am so glad that your mum has you. Do you have any other siblings who can share the load with you?

Seeing it from my own perspective now, it makes all the difference in the world to have someone who you can discuss your fears and worries with and discuss things openly. I am glad to hear that your mum is a very strong lady, as a positive approach is a great help in coping with all that is going on.

I sincerely hope that the results on Thursday are as good as they can be. I shall be thinking of you both and praying for a favourable outcome. Do please let us know how she gets on.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine,

we have just come out of the meeting for biopsy results.
the consultant did confirm that it is cancer and in her professional opinion, it has come from the breast. She said either secondary from the first breast cancer 16 years ago (although the consultant at the time 16 years ago said that he had managed to get everything) or it could be "occult" breast cancer as there is nothing in the actual breast but the markers from the biopsy are breast markers. The consultant said that sometimes the cancer cells go to the nearest lymph node even if there is nothing in the breast.
Next step is an MRI and CT scan to see if there is a spread (in the liver, lungs etc.) which the consultant said was unlikely due to no symptoms and feeling perfectly fit and healthy. Once the results of those scans come through we can then move forward with a treatment plan of chemotherapy first then surgery, or surgery and then chemotherapy. The breast care nurse seemed positive and although the initial bad news of "yes it is cancer" wasn't great, the consultant reassured us that the waiting for the next few weeks will not affect the outcome of the treatment.

More waiting but at least we know What it is now and that it is treatable. Maybe we can get a decent night sleep for the first time in weeks!

thank you again so much for your replies, they have really helped. Hopefully the wait isn't too long and we can crack on with treatment.
