My intro to the forum

I've just had the best holiday ever with my wife, son and family in Scotland.  We were supposed to be there for two weeks but had to come back after one.  I feel so happy.

About five weeks ago I went to the doctor to get ointment for an eruption of a hair follicle in my right armpit. She was concerned about a deep lump and sent me to the breast clinic to investigate.  I was attended by a lovely team and other than the extremely long waiting room times it was a pleasant experience despite the nervous period between biopsies and report.  Turned out to be a stage 3 melanoma and so I had to be referred across to the skin clinic.  I received very quick attention due to the combined efforts of GP and breast clinic.  They even sorted out by delaying appointments so that I could get away for the first week of my holiday.  As my GP said, my melanoma boat had sailed.  So now having had a few CT scans I am again waiting nervously for the report this Friday.

I do hope for the best possible outcome but am prepared for the worst.  It will probably be something in-between.

So what has changed over the last two months?  I feel that I have become a different person.  I used to be a little bored with life and was a little ignored by friends and relatives.  Suddenly I feel more alive and the sky seems bluer.  However I am now a person with a label.

Maybe I will be different again after Friday.

The holiday was terrific for many reasons, weather, scenery, the place we stayed at, the closeness of family, the food and the wine.  For many hours we sat and watched the harbour seals below.

A complexity of islets
Ranging from the shore
Is diminished by the tide.
Simplicity restored.
Grey seals' slumber ended,
Lumber over rocks then
Slip smoothly into sea.
Slapping and tumbling, my delight.
I spend a half hour thrilling
At their joyful plunging flights before
Returning reluctantly one last time
Up the log jammed lane
To the homely home of Old Suardal..

This will define my outstanding memory of this period and not cancer.

  • Hi Jolamine

He is cutting a large C shape then will flap the skin over to clear tissues from around the tumour. I think he will be removing quite a few nodes as well as the bigun. He expects a lot of drainage to be needed.

I think you must be running a market garden!

I'm off to bed now as the letters keep running round the page.and making no sense.

    Kind regards

    David xx

I just thought it might be useful for others to see my cancer timeline so I have put it in my description

    Thank you

    Hi David,

Many thanks for posting your timeline. I think that this might be better coming from you, especially once you have had your surgey and treatment and have had a good outcome.

I have still got to reply to your message - just haven't had time.

In the meanwhile, I want to wish you all the very best for your surgery tomorrow and hope that all goes well.

I shall be thinking of you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine

What do you mean you haven't had time. You've only been to work, made the meals, cut the grass, filled the pots, posted the posts.

I'm lounging in my cubical waiting to be seen. A helicopter has just landed on the adjacent roof.

It was a very long walk from the bus station to ward 45. It was locked and barred.  So looked around for help and they phoned around to find where I should be.  It was all to do with being a bank holiday.

Your best wishes are greatfully received and I look forward to a message.

    Kind regards

    David

  • Hi Jolamine

Just an update on my care.

This Tuesday there will be an MDT meeting as my results are back.  I may get a phonecall soon after. And I am getting a little nervous but I also feel quite optimistic.

I have a rearranged surgical meeting Friday week so maybe I will be allowed to drive under 4 weeks after surgery.  I've been told by others this is too soon but the decision is my surgeons.

I'm away to do a bit of physio and massage my arm for the dreaded oedema.  I called the GP for some softer moisturiser and she said to warm up the Hydromol ointment.  I told her I've been using udder cream as well.  There was a bit of a silent pause.  Then 'Just keep it away from the wound'.  We have a country store that sells this stuff and everyone as well as the farmers uses it as a skin conditioner.

I hope you are getting on well.

    Kind regards

  • Hi dafra glad to see you managed to get away for a while.  Helps clear the cobwebs a bit eh?!  Im also away at my caravan after persuading him indoors to have a week off and so we are just chillin which is something neither of us ever do!

Still waiting for my results after now having had the surgery.  Im very sore, especially under the armpit and on either end of the scar but bizarely numb right through the middle section.  Ive got to see my CNS nurse tomorrow so will ask about it all then.

    keep smiling.

Glad the slap cheek didnt get you! Lol

    Hi David,

Sorry that I haven’t been in touch to wish you well for today. I have been at a conference all day today and was shattered when I arrived home. How did things go for you today? I sincerely hope that it was reasonable news.

Your mention of udder cream brought me back to my childhood on the farm. We considered it a great ‘heal all’ too.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine

  • Hi Jolamine

It was a really jittery day. I resisted the temptation to telephone as I'm sure I'll be contacted when they are ready.  But nothing.

Today I will just try and keep busy. Discovered our car is untaxed as the document had never been registered by the garage. Been running it for a month locally, no cameras, and now of course can't drive.  This wouldn't have happened when we had little bits of paper.  Anyway this has been a good distraction. I'll try and find other things to worry about. The cutlery drawer needs sorting.

Hope you have enough energy to continue with the looming necessary.

    Kind regards

  • Hi Pat

I know I answered you on the other thread but just to wish you a happy break

My wound continues today exactly parallel symptoms to your own. I've never mentioned this before I see but mine is in the right axilla which has quite limited my dexterity but I see the surgeon Friday week and when he sees what a magnificent job he has done, he will sign me off. I hope.

Any news from the front? Best wishes for a good result.

    Kind regards

    David
