Urgent referral after ultrasound - trying not to worry

Hi there,

Following a transvaginal ultrasound on the weekend my GP called to tell me that she was making a 'fast-track' 2 week referral to the gynaecologist (they've now also called and I've got an appointment Wednesday next week). It's knocked me for six a bit and although I'm thankful that the wait isn't too long it feels like forever and I'm finding it tough, knowing that the 2 week referral can be because cancer is a possibility.

I've been getting symptoms (spotting and a bit of pain in my pelvic area) for around 6 months and in October had the most excruciating period pains and heavy bleeding, which has happened every month but one since. I knew something was up as that's not normal for me, so saw the doc in Feb, who referred me for the ultrasound. I'd convinced myself that my symptoms pointed to endometriosis, so when the ultrasound technician mentioned that I'd be referred to a gynaecologist to talk to me about my uterus lining, and she seemed surprised that I hadn't been experiencing symptoms for longer, I figured that maybe it was endo.

Then I got the call from my GP yesterday to say that the ultrasound showed thickened uterus lining and said she was making an urgent referral to gynaecologist, where they may do MRI or hysteroscopy. She mentioned a one-stop shop, not sure what that means? She then mentioned something about that they may find it's fibroids or polyps, but that they need to rule out cancer too. It was the secretary who called to book me in for the gynae appointment, and she said I'd be sent a letter with more info, so I guess that may give me a better idea of what tests they might do and what will happen at the appointment?

Tried to talk to my mum about it to relieve my worries but she lives a long way away and is quite matter of fact about medical issues (she had problems with fibroids and had to have a hysterectomy, so has been through similar), which I do appreciate but I felt I wanted to be able to talk her about it more.

Sorry for long post, would really love to hear from anyone who's been through/ going through similar. Just reading other's posts has been a big help.

  • Hi, I felt the need to reply to your post as I'm sort of in the same boat. I've been in pain for about a year and a half, periods suddenly very heavy and bleeding plus strange discharge in between, my stomach is swollen like a balloon, I can't stop weeing and it hurts when I need to wee, my bowel habits have completely changed, I feel sick alot and struggle to eat etc. I had a scan recently, seen the same sonographer a few times and she always says all's fine just call to get the results in about 2 weeks, this time after transvaginal ultrasound she looked worried and said ' call your doctor in a week, make sure you call the doctor in a week!' I couldn't say much as my son was with me. The doctors called 2 days after the scan and said I need to speak to the doctor, he explained that I have endometrial thickness, an enlarged ovary and fluid build up, but that he wasn't going to refer me as I'd seen gynae recently and had another appointment in a month. My gynae appointment is soon. I had a c section a year ago and the scan result said possible adenomyosis so it's either a complete c section mess up or cancer. I have 5 children and I'm worried. When is your gynae appointment and did you get your scan results? Why do they leave us in limbo!? It's horrible.

  • Hi all am new here but want to share my story too been since Xmas feeling poorly there’s me thinking time of the month again and again no can’t be bleeding after periods inbetween  periods after sex am lucky if am having 1weeek break telling you when I get it yes it’s heaven anyway took the bait went to gp told her usual symptoms bleeding cramp sore back feeling sick sore sides bloating up constantly in loo peeing so she done a internal bloods checked next minute she said ooohh ur ovires are filled eh excuse me what ? Then she insist I need a wee pelvis ultrasound so was there Thursday get it all done now Friday morning gp calls like 8am telling me a appointment is needed to go speak with her 3rd July now am really nervous !!sorry long post x

  • Hi I’m new on here. I’m having similar symptoms. I had a pelvic scan 2 weeks ago tomorrow and they told me to check with doctor for the results within 7-10 days. As of Friday the results weren’t back yet, but a couple days after my scan I got a letter through with a gyno appointment which is tomorrow.

I was wondering how you got on with your appointment as been no update. Hope all went ok x

  • Ahh sorry I replied to someone else when I meant to ask you . I’m new to this

I hope everything went ok, do you have an update xx

  • Hi all sorry for such late feedback had all my test and scans I have a small cyst on my right ovary but been told it’s nothing to worry about as for the bleeding they can’t see where it’s coming from womb looks good lining looks fine so all in this matter I have to keep a diary of bleeding back in 3 months for another update
  • Hi, I just wrote a long reply and can't see it now so apologies if this double posts. I've been meaning to post an update for ages as I know how helpful I found it to read others updates. Sorry it's taken me so long.

In short, everything was fine and the biopsy came back clear. As soon as I went in for my appointment I felt more in control, and was just grateful that the wait was over. The consultant was great, she explained why I'd been referred and what the hysteroscopy would entail. She also said that she felt it was unlikely that it would show up anything too serious.

The hysteroscopy was less painful than I thought it would be. I took painkillers beforehand as advised and I barely felt it. She had a good look around and couldn't see anything untoward. No sign of polyps as had been suspected. She also did a biopsy, and said that it would be highly likely to come back clear.

As there didn't seem to be anything untoward that was causing my symptoms she though that they were most likely due to normal changes in hormone levels, and advised hormonal contraceptives to manage the symptoms. I've been taking the pill and now have no issues with pain/heavy bleeding.

Dinksw - I hope that your gyno appointment went ok today and that you have been given more info and reassurance. And to all the other ladies on this post I hope you had a positive outcome. The stress and worry is awful and I feel what you're going through xx

  • Hi All

Im just joining onto this as im now doing the stupid thing if googling when I know I shouldn’t.

I have a past history with endometriosis and conceived my little girl through IVF, iv always had painful periods but the past few months they have been horrendous even fainting from the pain. My GP sent me for a ultrasound yesterday and whilst there she told me she seen a cyst so to go to my GP next week. This afternoon I received a call from my GP less than 24 hours after the scan stating that I need an emergency appt so one booked in for 1 week on Monday but I also need to get bloods done tomorrow to check for ovarian cancer the CA something test. With it being bank holiday the results won’t be back until Tuesday.

I am now sitting here worrying like mad if the blood test comes back ok why would I still need an emergency appt? These are obviously questions I should of asked today but I was shocked so didn’t think has anyone had this blood test done before the appt talkative could put my mind at ease this evening?

    Many thanks
