Possible cancerous polyp in bowel told today

Hi

Been a tough day which started with CT scan results that unexpectedly came back showing a growth. I didn't cope very well in with the consultant really. I think im starting to get my head round things. Because there's been no sample of it via colonoscopy instead a virtual CT scan, I've not been diagnosed with cancer. But because it's 3/4cm one likelihood is that it is. It's in my large bowel and I've been told there's no evidence of it having spread into my liver or lungs. Im hanging a bit bcos It's getting removed but I won't know if its cancerous til after. I originally had a anal fissure after a cist was removed that they misagnosed as piles. I was then told over 12 months ago I had h pylori after a camera down my stomach. This was treated twice before it went. I put my anema down to this and possible stomach ulcers. My gastric health has been poor since and it's took longer than it should to get this last scan. The colonoscopy showed nothing but the CT scan has. I've pre op liver and lung scans to have, which doctor says are routine, he's not looking for cancer as CT scan showed no spread. Then 5/6 weeks before op.  I'm 45 and have no history in family.  Consultant was surprised it's there but obviously it's been with me a number of years. I hate operations but I just want it done now. I'm moving house next week so I've no choice but to be positive or it won't happen. I think it's been caught in time so I have to be thankful it's coming out

  • Hi

My polyp was made up of cells that can turn cancerous. Are you having bowel problems too. It’s so scary.x

  • Hi,

Thanks for reply. So did they remove it and then all ok? Yes it's been the worst few months of my life I'm in absolute pieces about it all. I'm in my 30's with young kids so it's all so much to get my head around. I had a normal colonoscopy and they couldn't get very far, so waited and waited for a CT colonoscopy- a week later I found out there is a 2cm suspicious malignant looking flat polyp which they have said is very suspected to be cancer! As they can't do a biopsy on it as they can't get to it I'm booked in for surgery to remove a large part of my bowel! I'm preying it won't be cancer but they are pretty sure it is.

  • Hi. I’m sorry to hear that they think you have a suspicious polyp. I had a CT scan, the one where they inject dye into you and it feels weird like something cold going thro your body, I’m not sure what it’s called. They found everything was okay.

I then had the colonoscopy. I was told I had a 5cm polyp and it did not look suspicious. They did a biopsy and said it had the potential to turn cancerous. Because of the size of the polyp they had to get a specialist surgeon to remove it. When I had it removed it turned out to be 10cm not 5cm. It was flat like yours. They cut it away, but because it was twice as big as they had thought they didn’t manage to bring all of it down from my colon, something that has made me suffer terrible nightmare worrying it’s still in there but 3 months after the removal I went back for another colonoscopy and everything was clear.

I then went back for my yearly and it had grown again. It was about 3mm and was removed immediately during the colonoscopy.

Everything seemed to go back to normal again but then I started to have cramps, diarrhoea and constipation and am so exhausted really bad and have absolutely no apitite and this is ongoing.  it was confirmed I had diverticulitis but the polyp site was clear.

When I spoke to the surgeon about my polyp, they told me that although they didn’t think it was cancerous, if I it was they would possibly remove  the effected colon and rejoin it and I agreed I wanted that done if it was  because then it’s gone.

Easier said than done I know, but try not to worry. When is your surgery booked in for?
