Possible cancerous polyp in bowel told today

Hi

Been a tough day which started with CT scan results that unexpectedly came back showing a growth. I didn't cope very well in with the consultant really. I think im starting to get my head round things. Because there's been no sample of it via colonoscopy instead a virtual CT scan, I've not been diagnosed with cancer. But because it's 3/4cm one likelihood is that it is. It's in my large bowel and I've been told there's no evidence of it having spread into my liver or lungs. Im hanging a bit bcos It's getting removed but I won't know if its cancerous til after. I originally had a anal fissure after a cist was removed that they misagnosed as piles. I was then told over 12 months ago I had h pylori after a camera down my stomach. This was treated twice before it went. I put my anema down to this and possible stomach ulcers. My gastric health has been poor since and it's took longer than it should to get this last scan. The colonoscopy showed nothing but the CT scan has. I've pre op liver and lung scans to have, which doctor says are routine, he's not looking for cancer as CT scan showed no spread. Then 5/6 weeks before op.  I'm 45 and have no history in family.  Consultant was surprised it's there but obviously it's been with me a number of years. I hate operations but I just want it done now. I'm moving house next week so I've no choice but to be positive or it won't happen. I think it's been caught in time so I have to be thankful it's coming out

  • Hi Kerry, I ended up having my polyp removed a month ago by another surgeon who specialised in more complex polyps (it was 4cms and right the way round on the right side of my colon by the caecum) I was very worried before and they got me to have a CT scan too, but thankfully got the results last week and it was benign! Just got have a recheck in 3 months! Are you having the colonoscopy in an attempt for them to remove it? You got to have any scans etc? X

  • Hi Oak3389, I think dysplasia is a term which generally means that it could go on to develop into something if it was left alone, almost like pre-cancerous? I presume they are just going to recheck you in a few months to make sure nothings returned?

  • Hi Bisson

im glad to hear you are all well and your operation to remove your polyp resulted in a clear bill of health.

I have a polyp and I was wondering how they removed yours. I had a CT scan and nothing showed on that and then I had a colonoscopy and was told I have a 5cm polyp. I’ve been told there are two ways of removal, colonoscopy way or open surgery to remove it.

They won’t biopsy it until it’s been removed. Can I ask, did they biopsy yours before removal and how long did it take for results. They’ve biopsied other areas of the the colon but I’m waiting on the results.

What did the operation or colonoscopy entail that removed your polyp. Any info and advice would be great.x

  • Hi Kadash,

Hope you are feeling well.  A clear CT scan is a positive sign. A different surgeon who specialises in large/complex polyps removed mine via the colonoscopy route, I was warned that if he was unable to do it I may have had to have a small piece of bowel removed (bowel resection). The surgeon managed to break the polyp up and remove it by piece meal, due to the size he had to put a few metal clips in place to help with the healing process, but I was fortunate that this was all done via the colonoscopy. The actual procedure took about 45 minutes but other than being a little bit uncomfortable was completely manageable. Like you they did not biopsy my polyp initially either and I only got results once it was removed and I think this may have been after around 2 weeks. I ended up having a recheck at the end of last year and everything was ok. Got to be checked again in 3 years.  I hope everything goes well for you.

  • hi Bisson...

Thank you so much for your reply. There’s not really anyone to talk to with the covid and your reply was a godsend. It was really informative and reassuring especially as I too have decided to go the Colonoscopy route for removal. Once the polyp is out and they biopsy it, if it’s clear that’s good news and if not the plan would then be to remove the affected area of colon and rejoin it.

I notice you said a specialist Surgeon who removes large polyps removed yours. Was he already at your local hospital or did you have to be referred to another hospital to be treated by the specialist surgeon.

My polyp is quite large too at 2” It’s the kind that is laid flat on the colon rather than the mushroom type on a stem.  How long did you wait from diagnosis to removal. Things are all a bit up in the air with this covid virus so I try to forget about it if I can, although it’s still there in the back of your mind.xx

  • Hi Bisson

Hope you are well. These are strange times with the covid and I think we might never go back to our carefree lifestyles being able to take most things for granted Health is the most important thing for everyone.

I wanted to ask you about the clips.  You said that you had clips in to hold it together, did you have to go back and have them removed or will they just stay there. My hospital has told me they are looking for a specialist surgeon for me so that it can be done ASAP. I sent you a friend request and wondered if you could tell me which hospital/specialist surgeon did yours. I really want to get this done ASAP and I don’t care how far I have to travel. I had thought my own consultant would remove it but ive been told all the consultants can only do up to a size 2 and mine is a 4 so they aren’t able to do it. I try not to think about this wait but even though I’m trying hard not to, I feel I’m getting a bit anxious again. Xx

  • Hi

I'm new to this site and saw this thread.

I hope everyone is doing ok?

Kadash as you were the most recent person to post I was wondering if you have you had your procedure yet and how are you doing?

Like you I'm waiting for an apt with specialist consultant to remove large polyp they couldn't remove during diagnostic colonoscopy. They didnt take a biopsy at time. I was informed I needed it removed urgently and I would be back very quickly. 3 weeks later my case still hadn't been discussed at MDT as the specialist consultant has been on annual leave. Keep being told covid is stopping services running. I do understand this as I'm a nurse myself and appreciate the strain on the NHS but its hugely frustrating when you are worried and feel unwell. Nurses are the worst patients lol.  This is my second large polyp . I had one removed 15 hrs ago which was benign. I have diarrhoea multiple times a day, stomach pains and cramps and am exhausted all the time. I just want to know if its cancerous or not  and to have it removed and to feel better. All other tests for coeliac, crohn's etc have come back negative. They are arranging a stomach scan as well to see if there is anything else causing the pain and back ache.

I get how you are feeling in your post.

Hope things have improved for you

     Take care x

  • Hi Cupcake and a big welcome:happy:. Hopefully my surgery is going to be at the end of the month. Like you I’ve have diarrhoea and stomach pains, intensifying more over the last 9 months to a point where I couldn’t even sit comfortably and it was keeping me awake at night. Lately I have had diarrhoea that turned to blood and that’s something I can’t even think about. I’m constantly tired with low blood pressure and by mid afternoon want to go back to bed. My eyes look like I’ve been  in a fight and been given two black eyes. I’m scared stiff of the procedure and can’t sleep. I too haven’t had a biopsy yet. I’d like it removed but am also petrified of the results. I think they don’t like to do a biopsy prior to surgery because it sometimes makes scar tissue and then makes it more difficult to remove the polyp so scary as it is, I understand the reason.  My tests came back okay like yours, but I’m having more tests done later because I also have pains/tenderness above my tummy button and a green tongue.  Did the hospital find both of your polyps 3 weeks ago. Did you have the colonoscopy procedure and how come they didn’t remove them both when they found them or both at the same time yesterday. Do you know how big your polyp is and where it is situated. Did thy say that the polyps they found look the same.  I think it probably won’t be long before you hear something now because they do seem to be resuming services so try to hold onto that; and so far, with all my tests I’ve just had calls for all my consultations and then  been allocated an appointment within a couple of days.  The phone call came when I had just about given up all hope. The other good thought you need to hold onto is they’ve already removed one of your polyps and it was benign.x

  • Hi Kadash,

    Thanks so much for replyjng.

Really glad you had a call and procedure will be soon that must be a relief to know there is a plan xx

My first large polyp removal that was benign was 15 yrs ago.

I had a follow up colonoscopy 10 yrs ago and showed some inflammation but no growths.

This time just the one polyp 30mm long. On screen appears width of the rectum and blocking which may be why have pain and diarrhoea. It's in the upper rectum. I'm constantly in bed as exhausted. Not working at moment due to urgent diarrhoea and pain in case have an accident and the fatigue. I've had a few big bleeds into toilet and some blood in stools. They took couple of biopsies of inflamed areas of bowel during procedure to check for colitis or crohn's which was negative.

There were some scraggy looking areas of the polyp where other areas were smoother. The atmosphere in the room changed and consultant called in another consultant to look at it and they were discussing certain areas. I was clued to screen watching as I didnt have sedation. The guys said you've caused a lot of attention trying to lighten the mood but you immediately worry. No one said its cancer but  he said large growth and needs to come out asap and if no cancer will change in next few months. Those words stick as we are nearly a month along now. I'm sure if sinister it can be removed cleanly it's just the unknown.

Fingers crossed for you and everyone going through and stress and worry at the moment xxx

  • Hi guys,

Does anyone know what this terminology means .

    Mucosa macroscopically T1

In upper rectum 30mm polyp 1sp Kudo iiiL

Possibly amenable for EMR discuss in polyp MDT.

    This was from colonoscopy report.

From what I can make out from googling it means there is some pre cancerous cell changes?? SP is sub pedunculated I think.

EMR is the procedure to remove.

I still haven't heard back from MDT as were waiting for clinical specialist to return from leave and were hoping it was discussed last friday.

Am I correct in my thinking?

    Thanks Julie
