Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Tonsil.

Hi, Anybody else with this cancer? I was diagnosed 1/12/17 and treatment started 18/12/17. Entered a trial, 25x weekday daily radiotherapy plus 5x Chemotherapy. OK until start of week four, but had to start co codomel last night. Appetite has gone and forcing the fortysips down is a real problem, but have found thin porridge with honey to be good. Really find pureed meals inedible. I know it is only going to get worse over next four weeks. Any tips or thoughts. Thanks.

you have to keep at it though I think I did mine every 4 hours and not only were my ulcers excruciating but I also had had a tongue biopsy .... which ... ... was mmmmmm painful

try to get a small head toothbrush as you might find you keep catching your ulcers with a normal adult size brush....they are brilliant and get to all the little places that the bacteria that’s creating your ulcers, lerk

nearly half way there on the radiotherapy, the changes will start to kick in now and looking after yourself becomes a bit more difficult but more important now

hang in there and I hope I’ve been of some help

oh dear sorry to hear it’s taking a bit of time getting rid of this sickness ... it’s the last thing you need with a sore throat too....has you medical team any idea why this is happening or just started again.

did you have enough strength to change the tyre then.

keep going ... it is the home straight, but it’s a long one

look at the post I have just replied to Lynne on ulcer treatments, there is a page on my blog about it.

You are nearly half way there, my tips going forward are as follows

    1. Get lots of e45 on that neck after radiation, don’t get lotion get the cream as the lotion has a substance in that that will irritate the hell out of your neck

    2. You might now find that even general water is to harsh for you, try boiling it and let it cool down until it’s tepid, or try Chinese tea cooled down ... its vile stuff but you should have minimal taste by now, so can’t taste the stuff

    3. As you now have minimal saliva ( the mouths own defence against bad bacteria) and especially as you are still and will trying to eat through the rest of your treatment, keep you mouth ultra clean is key to keeping those ulcers at bay. Go get gallons of diphlam and get a small headed toothbrush to clean those teeth .... see my post to lynne

hang in there and let us know how it’s going

Have apt with consultant first thing Monday, so I will see what he has to say. Feeling a bit better today and will try something more substantial tomorrow.

Did not even consider changing tyre - weight now 13 8 from 17 2 - so more muscle on spaghetti. Mobile tyre service did the honours.

Still feeling good in myself, but will be glad when ct scan is done, so I can take some decisions,  eg work or retire fully?

  • Hi Paula, the nausea is only an irritant that is stopping me taking solids and I'm sure it will soon pass.  I had it easy through the treatment process and daresay this is just a bit of payback. Also, it has helped me get to 13 8 from 17 2 , which I am quite happy with - apart from having to find some new clothes shortly.

Another positive is that the continual mucus production has pretty much stopped. There is still some first thing, but a cup of warm water soon shifts that. I have recently found warm water to be more effective than the nebulizer - I wish I'd tried it ages ago.

You are making me feeling very old about the Onedin Line - I think it must have been mid/ late 70's.

My sleep patterns are still out of kilter, so I can add Bullseye at 0200 to the list,

Keep positive - every minute now is a minute you are closer to the end of the treatment and nearer recovery.

    John. Xxxx

glad to hear you had a better day

yep I rember the weight loss and I deliberately put on a stone before I went in ... went in at 15:4 cam out at just over 12 and only manages to get back to are 13.5 ...3.5 years after treatment

if I could afford to I would retire now, but 55 is a bit early I suppose

i hope your meeting on Monday goes well and have a good Easter

paula and Lynne ... try to have a good Easter too

ps, just to reiterate what Vatch says about e45. Put the cream on with a trowel. I assume you are not paying for it, so get plenty in stock for when the treatment has finished. The radio and chemo doctors operate independently - get prescriptions off both.
