Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Tonsil.

Hi, Anybody else with this cancer? I was diagnosed 1/12/17 and treatment started 18/12/17. Entered a trial, 25x weekday daily radiotherapy plus 5x Chemotherapy. OK until start of week four, but had to start co codomel last night. Appetite has gone and forcing the fortysips down is a real problem, but have found thin porridge with honey to be good. Really find pureed meals inedible. I know it is only going to get worse over next four weeks. Any tips or thoughts. Thanks.

  • Hi kathleen

mmm ... get used to changing your favourite foods ... what you used to like you may no longer be able to taste or take

i used to love a cheese and pickled onion sandwich .... I can’t really do sliced bread unless I have a gallon of fluid and pickled onions I just can’t do .... but I have managed to find gherkins and flour wraps ..... so my enjoyment is back .... I chuck a lot of other mushy stuff in there too salad with mayonnaise, coleslaw, potatoes salad .... god I’m hungry just thinking about it .... the good thing about wraps too is that you can’t build them up too big ... otherwise you can’t wrap them, so they are nice smaller mouthfuls and I don’t need a gallon of fluid

it all about starting again with food and keep trying stuff, just because you don’t like or can’t take something one week, does not mean you won’t be able to in a few weeks

lets us know how you get on

  • Hi there, I’m doing okay thank you , treatment starts 7th March. Had an OPT X-ray of my teeth done yesterday so I’m now nervously waiting to hear if I’m to have any extractions ( terrified of having my teeth pulled out!) x

I had grossly underestimated the potential recovery period. I had booked a special treat for my wife and myslf on April 9, part of which is a very good meal. I am now doubting whether I will be well enough to last a day out, let alone eat the meal. I will see how it goes, but may need to reschedule or cancel.

Took the Haloperidol last night. Slept well, but too early to affect nausea - have not been able to put toothbrush in mouth this morning yet. Will try again shortly and it may well be that being sick could be a good thing.

I only have a normal nebulizer - will investigate the portable one.

    Cheers

sorry to hear things are not going to well but these are all upward slope problems

try to get yourself some diphlam from the doctors .... you should get it free being a cancer patient.

Also try and get yourself some small headed tooth brushes ... they are a bit less cumbersome to use and do a great job

  • Thanks Vatch

I have been using a childs brush and Difflam mouth wash , but might try the spray.

Taste buds started returning Monday, which is obviously good news. At the moment, however, it has just confirmed how disgusting fortijuice is!

yep fortijuice ain’t good .... but glad to hear the taste is coming back .... I was really devastated when mine went and I think losing my taste was also responsible for me not liking food and just going off food totally .... I’m glad to say that did not last long once taste started to return

    keep chugging on up hill

  • Hi Vatch,

Slow progress. Still unable to get down anything thicker than fortijuice - consultant will not be happy at our meeting on Thursday. Also still feeling pretty weak and light headed after short walks. Have now lost suffucient to make ' healthy ' band on bmi chart. Downside is that if I go back to work, none of my suits fit.

Nonetheless, have to remain positive - there are many worse off than me. New target is a sausage and cheese sandwich from my own barbecue, by scan time in May.
