Endoscopy scare

I had an endoscopy last Thursday where they found an 'ill defined abnormality' at the join between my oesophagus and stomach.  They took biopsies.

They have said I need a CT scan and will see a doctor when all results are back, within the next 6 weeks.

I've now convinced myself I have cancer and cannot stop worrying and crying.  I realise this is an over reaction, but my sensible self just won't listen.

Family are saying if they suspected cancer they would have arranged the CT scan there and then and not made me wait ?

Any advice, thoughts, action plans would be greatly appreciated.

  • I don't want you to think that you are not going to get a response.  Perhaps someone will get back to you today (I am afraid I don't know enough to respond) or you can copy your post into Ask the Nurses who are well-placed to give you a knowledgeable response.  Best wishes.

  • Hi Su and welcome to the forum which no-one wants to join.

You are in what most people agree is the worst stage of the diagnostic process - knowing there is something wrong but not knowing exactly what it is. Whenever we have a gap in our knowledge our minds try to fill in the gaps and more often than not we imagine the worst case. Cancer is obviously worst case but there are other possible causes of the abnormality.

Your family are trying to stop you worrying unnecessarily but they don't understand the fear that is hanging over you.

None of us on here are doctors so we'd be foolish to try to tell you that you're worrying unnecessarily or that you are right to worry!

You can't really second guess someone's condition by how long it takes a  hospital to arrange a CT scan. There are so many factors at play including how many scanners the hospital has, whether they are all working, how many radiology staff are available and most importantly how busy the hospital is.

The "up to six weeks" quoted is the longest you will wait - some biopsy results will probably be available within a week and you may be called back sooner rather than later. Please don't read too much into this - they will probably call you in for a face to face discussion whether the news is good or bad.

Write down any questions you have and write down the answers while you are with the consultant - most people forget over 60% of what they are told if they don't write it down due to the stress.

Finally - stay away from Google! There is a lot of outdated and frankly incorrect information out there - if you must read up about cancer stick to the CRUK and MacMillan websites.

    Good luck with your results!
    Dave
