Depressed and frightened

Hello,  after suffering from lichen planus in my throat for many years and endless dilatations, I had biopsies in July as my throat had been very sore for around 18 months.  The results were high grade dysplasia (pre-cancerous cells) in my oropharynx area.  Every time I swallow it hurts and more so with food.   The doctors have told me that the dysplasia could turn into cancer in the future and I am waiting to have treatment called EMR (endoscopic mucosal resection) which is really worrying  as the whole circumference of my throat is involved.  I wonder if anyone else has had this treatment and can give me some reassurance.

  • Hi christine its good to hear from you and im glad you are doing so well.hopefully you'll get the dilation done soon.I'm not doing to bad myself,I had my third halo treatment about two .weeks ago,and the endoscopy two weeks before that was the first one in a long time to show no high grade dysplasia just dysplasia.so my last report says I'll be having something called argon plasma coagulation in about three months time.hopefully coming to the end of m.treatment.although the doctor says that there is no guarantee that it wont come back things arre looking more positive.and after treatment finishes I will be monitored more closely than I was before.and having the barretts removed as well is a bonus.I've been lucky and haven't had any strictures so far but I think the reason for this is I have a really good doctor performing the halo.I hope you continue to be well and I would be interested to know how you get on with the dilation.

    Best wishes james

  • Hi James,  I'm really pleased to hear that your treatment is going well and that things are looking much more positive.  It's been a long process for you but getting near the end now.  Good news about the dysplasia too.  I also had the argon plasma coagulation (APC) treatment after they removed my tumour and I gather that it's quite a new and exciting treatment from what I've read.  Good luck with this and I'll let you know how I go with the dilation.  I have a missed call from the hospital today so think that could be for my procedure appointment.

    Best wishes Christine
