Depressed and frightened

Hello,  after suffering from lichen planus in my throat for many years and endless dilatations, I had biopsies in July as my throat had been very sore for around 18 months.  The results were high grade dysplasia (pre-cancerous cells) in my oropharynx area.  Every time I swallow it hurts and more so with food.   The doctors have told me that the dysplasia could turn into cancer in the future and I am waiting to have treatment called EMR (endoscopic mucosal resection) which is really worrying  as the whole circumference of my throat is involved.  I wonder if anyone else has had this treatment and can give me some reassurance.

  • Hi James,  thought I would let you know my good news that the scan and biopsies all came back clear!!  It's such a relief and I can hardly believe it but my treatment has worked.  I have to go back in six months for a further scan and have one more throat dilation this coming Tuesday as last week's was cancelled due to me being ill with a urine infection.   The soreness in my throat has gone now and I can swallow fairly normally.  You were right in saying that it was probably all due to the treatments I've had although it is easy to fear the worst.

Good luck with your future treatments and don't forget to write and let me know how you go on.

  • Hi christine that is fantastic newsi am so pleased that the treatment  has worked it must be a Great relief  for you.and a big congatulations to you for having the strength to get through all youre treatments,it cant have been easy.,well done.now hopefully you can begin a normal life again.i go to hospital this friday for pre halo emr to remove any lesions then 2 weeks later i will have the halo treatment itself.

    Best wishes james

  • Thanks davek.  It was brilliant news!!

  • Thanks for your good wishes James and, yes, now I can get on with my life and watch my three lovely grandchildren grow up.

I think that the worst bit, apart from the actual treatment and side effects, is the waiting in between finishing treatment and the appointment for the results which in my case was just over 3 months.  It's like being in limbo but eventually it's over!

I wish you the best with your two upcoming treatments and please keep in touch and let me know how you go on.

    With very best wishes

  • I have a friend who has had cancer in his throat and could hardly speak.  He was older and worried. Just to let you know this was very serious. He had waited a long time before seeing a doctor. But he is doing fine now. Voice was dry and course for years after but came back almost as strong as before. I was worried for him. But he is great now. It is scary but I honestly in my 20 yrs as a medic have seen cases similar where the pt did very well. Best of luck to you.

  • Hi Christine hope you are well. Thought I'd keep you up to date.I had  pre halo scope 3 weeks ago roughly 7 months after my emr.It showed that I had 2 islands.anyway I had halo ultra ablation on friday and  was shocked to be told that these islands are high grade dysplasia.im just so disappointed that this happened so quickly.I just hope that its not going to progress any further.the islands were blasted with halo and hopefully that might get rid of them.the hospital where I was treated is a teaching hospital so I wasn't able to ask the doctor any questions afterwards.the report didnt say a lot just that  I still have 6cm of circumferential barretts still remaining.they didn't biopsy any of this so I've no idea if there is any dysplasia amongst it.all I know is that I have another pre halo scope in 6 weeks followed by more halo 2 weeks after that.im on a soft food diet as is still have a little pain when swallowing from the halo therapy.hopefully this will be gone in a few days as im craving some fish and chips lol.how is everything with you christine?.

    Best wishes james

  • Hi James

It's nice to hear from you and I'm so sorry to hear about the high grade dysplasia.  It's a shock to the system but from what I have read the treatment you are having seems to be what is recommended for Barretts.  I know my daughter asked about Halo treatment when we first saw the doctors but it wasn't suitable for my area which was much higher up.  I, too, had my initial emr treatment at a teaching hospital and like you was frustrated that you couldn't ask the doctor any questions afterwards but that's the way they seem to work.  It was very different, though, once I was passed on to the Oncology and I had much more contact with the doctors and nurses.

I hope that your swallowing pain is easing and that soon you will be able to have those fish and chips!!  I know what it's like not being able to eat what you want.  I hope your next round of treatments go okay and stay positive!

I'm doing okay so far but might have to have another throat dilation sometime in the future if it narrows again.  Please keep in touch and let me know how you go on.

    Best wishes Christine

  • Hi Christine I haven't heard from you for a while.I hope you are keeping well.

    Best wishes james

  • Hi James,

Nice to hear from you.  I'm doing fine so far.  A few weeks ago I saw my Oncology doctor for results of blood tests and scan.  Everything okay and I'm due to see him again in August and waiting to go in to Gastro again for a dilatation.  My throat has narrowed slightly and I think I'll benefit from it being 'stretched' because of the scar tissue.  Hope everything going okay with your treatment and let me know how you are doing.

    Best Wishes
