Traumatic aborted colonoscopy - now long wait for CT scan.

Hi there

I was sent for an urgent colonoscopy as my GP was worried I might have bowel cancer. I took my moviprep Monday and Tuesday morning and then went to Hospital. I was not given an appointment time, only an arrival time. I was taken to a small room at 2.20pm and fitted with a canula, which was quite painful. I was then left in that room by myself until 4.00pm. I was getting increasingly anxious from the waiting and I wasn't allowed to go to reception to see my partner, and he wasnt allowed in to see me. At 4.00pm a nurse came to tell me I was next, and I was taken to the exam room at 4.30pm. Since I was very anxious I asked for the maximum sedation and they gave me 5mg mizadolam and 100ug of Fentanyl. I felt a very slight drunk sensation, and then it passed. I was completely lucid, and recall the whole horrific ordeal. The pain was indescribable. I was sobbing and pleading for more painkillers. They decided to stop, which made me even more upset because I didnt want them to abandon the procedure, just give me a GA or more painkillers! The doctor said he saw the left side of my colon and that it was totally normal. I was allowed to leave after 10 minutes, and at no point did I feel woozy, sleepy or any effects that I had been told to expect from the sedation. They have now told me I need to wait 3 weeks to hear back about arranging a CT scan to view the side of my colon they couldn't reach. Obviously, I am really upset and quite angry - a) because the painkillers didn't work b) because the procedure wasn't completed and c) because I now have an anxious wait for the CT scan, if I even get it.

Has anyone else had this experience? Everyone I have spoken to said they didnt feel any pain, only discomfort. I'm now terrified of ever having the procedure again. Why didn't the painkillers have any effect on me? Can I ask for it again under general anaesthetic? What happens if they refuse the CT scan or I have to wait months for an appointment? Should I make a complaint to the hospital? I'm really unsure what to do.

  • Hi

I had the mediprep I suggest room temperature while drinking it. I have to say the colonoscopy was so painful I've just had it now I'm buckled up in pain from all the air and still haven't passed wind. I'm in debilitating pain daily anyway and said I don't need pain relief. My mistake Omg I'll be honest it hurts but not for everyone. I hope your results are clear try not to worry so much I do understand living with something daily isn't easy I can also become bitter. The staff and the surgeon was 100% amazing and cannot thank them enough. My results are clear thankfully...Not everyone feels bad pain cramps unfortunately we did I'm in tears writing this as the pain is horrendous...Take care all and good look with the results the gas and air didn't help me...I was also dosed on morphine prior also tramadol...

  • I've also fybro seriously? Is this why I was in horrendous pain I've finally eased off now the procedure was excruciating. Even with the gas and air. I told them I don't need pain meds because I'm dosed up already and suffer enough pain daily. I had the sigmoid months ago and that didn't hurt in anyway! Thanks for sharing. I warn anyone before a colonoscopy don't Google it I was terrified even though I relaxed. I hope your health is doing better now and things under control.

  • I've had a few colonoscopies over the last 5 years and will have them every year from now on after bowel cancer.

I find them painful. I have the sedative through the canula and also gas & air.

The time I had the least pain was when they used a finer scope.

Unfortunately this is the best test for bowel, one time when they couldn't do all mine I had to wait for a bowel ct to check it fully.

Hope you get it sorted soon, it is scary but needs doing so try and stay calm, it will soon be over.

  • Hi elly

I know exactly how you feel I went in for mine yesterday 25/11/19 my appointment was at.9.30 for pre assessment the nurse asked why I'd been required sedation I explained then I have a scar in bother side due to.child birth she understand and said that it would.not be a problem. Not even 5 min later the surgeon came to see me and he suggested that I had gas and air and to be numbed instead of sedation I thought hes a surgeon he knows what hes in about how wrong was i. Off I went in to the room the nurses were lovely one gave me gas and air while.the other tried to reassure me he said that he was going to numb me and that I'd feel a little cold wast even in 2 minute and I was in agony the nuse kept saying keep breathing so I did but the pain was unbearable next thing the nurse was shouting "iv just seen notes and it stated for her to be sedated" by this point I was screaming curled in a ball as my stomach was killing me. He tried to explains him self but she wasnt having she just said "I understand you are the surgeon but thing like this or put on notes for a reason and this is why so they dont feel pain or discomfort "so the surgeon got my hand and but 2mg of sedation and some bustapan not even 2 min later he decided he could.not go on and the bend was.to tight and I was.in that much pain. Now I'm to wait.for ct colonoscopy to.go thought it all again

So please if anyone has got any advice I'd.like to here it.

  • Just catching up with these latest posts and while I absolutely do not wish pain or discomfort on anyone I do feel slightly better that it wasn't just me!!

My ct bowel scan was 2.5 weeks ago and today I phoned my GP surgery to see if any results arrived yet.  Nothing.  I was told it can be 2-4 weeks for results. Also if all clear I would not be informed.  I am not happy with this. On the one hand I suppose if anything really bad showed up I would assume I would be contacted for an appointment fairly quickly.  To have to keep checking with the surgery myself though is a strange way to do things.

Would you not think a quick phone call or letter to say good news there is not a thing to worry about is not too much to ask.

I will certainly let you all know here when I finally get some kind of result.

  • I know exactly what you went through as I had one without any form of sedation and it had to be stopped.  Then another one that had to be aborted as they couldn't get around the colon.  I refused the next one and finally had a scan which included an injection of dye into my arm, a really sensitive radiographer and no pain, so go for the scan and hopefully it won't be too long.  Good luck, Carol x

  • Finally I am pleased to report:

    Copy letter received today -

    Dear Dr XXXXX

You requested a one off colonoscopy on this lady in view of her family history.Unfortunately she was unable to have the colonoscopy which Mr XX attempted to do. We therefore booked a CT colonography. The results of this are now available and show no colonic mucosal abnormality. Clearly this result is reassuring.

What a relief and I am so happy it is all over.

Talking to people on here has been very good for me and I am grateful to be able to have shared with others what was a worrying time. My best wishes to those who may not be as fortunate X

  • Hi ave just had my 2nd one abanded in the space of 4 weeks due to sever pain now waiting for another appointment to get the general anaesthetic the level of pain was horrendous like you a never felt the affects of the sedation or the pain relief

  • Just come back from a horrendously painful colonoscopy.  Didn't expect so much pain with sedation and painkiller which as others have said didn't touch me .  I had a very painful and sore tummy anyway when I got there but with someone else carrying out the actual procedure the consultant was pushing my tummy in all directions to try and move my twisted colon.  I was trying to push their hands away to try and stop it they just told me not to do that.  I was so  hot and sweating the nurse looking after me put a cold wet flannel on my  forehead.   They did remove a polyp which seemed ok. Don't get me wrong the staff were amazing but I was just not expecting so much pain  almost as bad as childbirth.  What I was told that due to a hysterectomy some years ago adesions may have caused the twisting in colon and bladder pain.  I jave been told I will have to have it done again in 3 years    not sure about that

  • Hi, I know this was a while ago now but my partner is going through a similar situation at the minute and I wondered how they removed polyps as were not sure if they couldn't finish the procedure this time how are they going to do it the second? He's going for a mri and then another colonoscopy to remove polyps that we're left this time
