Traumatic aborted colonoscopy - now long wait for CT scan.

Hi there

I was sent for an urgent colonoscopy as my GP was worried I might have bowel cancer. I took my moviprep Monday and Tuesday morning and then went to Hospital. I was not given an appointment time, only an arrival time. I was taken to a small room at 2.20pm and fitted with a canula, which was quite painful. I was then left in that room by myself until 4.00pm. I was getting increasingly anxious from the waiting and I wasn't allowed to go to reception to see my partner, and he wasnt allowed in to see me. At 4.00pm a nurse came to tell me I was next, and I was taken to the exam room at 4.30pm. Since I was very anxious I asked for the maximum sedation and they gave me 5mg mizadolam and 100ug of Fentanyl. I felt a very slight drunk sensation, and then it passed. I was completely lucid, and recall the whole horrific ordeal. The pain was indescribable. I was sobbing and pleading for more painkillers. They decided to stop, which made me even more upset because I didnt want them to abandon the procedure, just give me a GA or more painkillers! The doctor said he saw the left side of my colon and that it was totally normal. I was allowed to leave after 10 minutes, and at no point did I feel woozy, sleepy or any effects that I had been told to expect from the sedation. They have now told me I need to wait 3 weeks to hear back about arranging a CT scan to view the side of my colon they couldn't reach. Obviously, I am really upset and quite angry - a) because the painkillers didn't work b) because the procedure wasn't completed and c) because I now have an anxious wait for the CT scan, if I even get it.

Has anyone else had this experience? Everyone I have spoken to said they didnt feel any pain, only discomfort. I'm now terrified of ever having the procedure again. Why didn't the painkillers have any effect on me? Can I ask for it again under general anaesthetic? What happens if they refuse the CT scan or I have to wait months for an appointment? Should I make a complaint to the hospital? I'm really unsure what to do.

  • Oh, that's awful. I hope you recover from the trauma soon.

Good luck with the result of the biopsies.

  • Having just read your post, I had exactly the same experience today. I had the maximum sedation but felt wide awake and not in the slightest sedated. The pain was unbearable to the point where I did eventually have to ask for the consultant to stop. I am now having to go back next week for a ct scan.

I have to say whilst the experience has left me sore and obviously without an answer, the hospital staff were so lovely and the nurse that discharged me gave me the follow up as the consultant had requested it.

I think that the external ct scan will be a different experience and I also think you will get one no problem as they haven’t been able to complete your investigation/procedure!

    Good luck and stay positive!

  • Hi

well ive just returned from my aborted colonoscopy. Too much pain and I was given a sedative when I originally said I would try with gas and air then sedation If pain was too much. After  commencing it got excruciatingly painful. Was given buscopan and don’t remember anything more till recovery.  I am so disappointed as the moviprep was horrible plus not eating. It says on the discharge summary suspected IBS! How can they tell and why diagnose without proof. No further investigation has been recommended. I feel a complete failure.i work for the same hospital and so feel totally embarrassed now.

  • Hi

Had my colonoscoy yesterday which had to be stopped due to pain.No entenox on site as additional pain relief.

Areas of potential cancer showed on PET scan so now have to wait until consultant decides next stage, just recivering from high level Non Hodgkins Lymohona so this process with prep and then half procedure is not good.

Just have to wait until 26th April but I will insist on full anesthesia even with risk next time, tolerated chemo but this is sonething else

  • Hi Mitchymoo,

What a horrible experience for you.

I’m sure your colleagues are professional enough not to gossip about your awful experience or be judgemental about your reaction. They could face being sacked for breach of the common law duty of confidentiality if they do (I have chaired NHS disciplinary meetings where this has happened).

Did they complete the endoscopy while you were out of it? That and your reaction to Buscopan (an IBS drug) might explain their “suspected IBS” note.

If you have been discharged with no follow up, it would be good to talk to your GP about next steps. If it is IBS, that is good news as it is treatable as a long-term condition.

    Best wishes

    Dave

  • Whilst my sympathies go out to the people writing  here that have gone through these  horrendous experiences, if you have not yet had your first colonoscopy  please be assured that not everyone goes through this. I have had 3 colonoscopies, due to finding polyps on the first one. Despite having a very loopy and twisted colon which make the procedure harder I have not had more than a bit of discomfort and on a couple of occasions feeling a bit faint because of the time the tube was inside trying to work its way round the twists. Watching the procedure is actually quite fascinating TV

  • Yes very similar  colonoscopy was painful for me despite max allowance of sedative. However  my  consultant radiographer ordered the ct virtual scan himselfI was lucky to get ct scan 2weeks later . Just awaiting results.  Quite nervous ,

  • What did you have to clear your colon? I had Moviprep. The taste was bareable but the diarrhoea was horrendous. I’ve never experienced anything like it. I literally was loo bound for 4 hours. I suppose it wasn’t helped by the fact I have a rectal prolapse and don’t have much control. Has anyone else had an awful experience from the Moviprep? There was intermittent pain during the colonoscopy but nothing like some experienced.

  • I just had the exact same as yourself I’m still close to crying and that’s been 1hour since they stopped the sedation never worked on me and I felt everything the cramps and pains I’m my stomach were unreal not even my labor pains were that sore, the pain got worse the further they went in and by that point I was almost screaming and sobbing with the pain they stopped the procedure even went I said I would continue but they stopped so the two days of being on the pan and all the pain during the excam was for nothing not sure what the next step is for me, will need to wait for another appointment to see the consultant again

I totally agree with you today 14/5/19 I had a colonoscopy, it was excruciating to say the least I was given Fentanyl 50 ug and midazolam 2 mg from the onset I could feel the discomfort and was writhing in pain so much they abandoned the procedure after enduring it for 20 minutes I never felt any drowsiness at all in fact I didn’t have no sense of pain relief whatsoever in the past I have had three endoscopy two without pain relief and one with I don’t know what will happen now but I cannot go through that again. I do know people who have had it done with little discomfort so don’t want my experience to put them off.
