Traumatic aborted colonoscopy - now long wait for CT scan.

Hi there

I was sent for an urgent colonoscopy as my GP was worried I might have bowel cancer. I took my moviprep Monday and Tuesday morning and then went to Hospital. I was not given an appointment time, only an arrival time. I was taken to a small room at 2.20pm and fitted with a canula, which was quite painful. I was then left in that room by myself until 4.00pm. I was getting increasingly anxious from the waiting and I wasn't allowed to go to reception to see my partner, and he wasnt allowed in to see me. At 4.00pm a nurse came to tell me I was next, and I was taken to the exam room at 4.30pm. Since I was very anxious I asked for the maximum sedation and they gave me 5mg mizadolam and 100ug of Fentanyl. I felt a very slight drunk sensation, and then it passed. I was completely lucid, and recall the whole horrific ordeal. The pain was indescribable. I was sobbing and pleading for more painkillers. They decided to stop, which made me even more upset because I didnt want them to abandon the procedure, just give me a GA or more painkillers! The doctor said he saw the left side of my colon and that it was totally normal. I was allowed to leave after 10 minutes, and at no point did I feel woozy, sleepy or any effects that I had been told to expect from the sedation. They have now told me I need to wait 3 weeks to hear back about arranging a CT scan to view the side of my colon they couldn't reach. Obviously, I am really upset and quite angry - a) because the painkillers didn't work b) because the procedure wasn't completed and c) because I now have an anxious wait for the CT scan, if I even get it.

Has anyone else had this experience? Everyone I have spoken to said they didnt feel any pain, only discomfort. I'm now terrified of ever having the procedure again. Why didn't the painkillers have any effect on me? Can I ask for it again under general anaesthetic? What happens if they refuse the CT scan or I have to wait months for an appointment? Should I make a complaint to the hospital? I'm really unsure what to do.

  • I had one yesterday I cry when I think about it as was more painfull than haveing my kids can't even describe and the nurses made me feel like I was a weirdo for screaming and crying and askeing them to stop the sedation did nothing for pain gas and air to edge of but when the pain came nothing was helping most traumatic experience never again, they did mention people with ibs get more pain surfing procedure but that took the ***.

  • Omg my husband is being fast tracked and had an aborted colonoscopy this week, he was sedated, had gas and air but was in such severe pain they had to stop. He was told he was thrashing around and hitting out, surely under sedation the pain should have been minimal, we are now waiting for the results of the ct scans, he said he felt picked on and was made to feel like a nuisance, such an awful time without being treated like a nuisance  he says never again also they were one person down to carry out the procedures on the day so felt very rushed.

  • I was absolutely petrified when sent for endoscopy 2 weeks ago, the consultant was lovely, gave me the max of sedation and pain relief. I had no memories of the procedure and was praying today's colonoscopy would go along the same lines.

I couldn't have been more wrong if I tried!

I have slow transit of the bowel anyhow so worried the picolax prep wouldn't completely clear me out. I managed 1 satchet of picolax at 11.30 am then 3 litres of fluids to help clear things through, nothing. 2nd satchet at 5pm and 2 litres of fluid I was then stuck on the toilet from 9pm through the night until 5am. Never been so sore in my life despite vaseline, sudacream and wet wipes.

By the time we left to get to the hospital I was still struggling with diarrhoea.

Got to the hospital, cannula in and off I went.

Different consultant agreed to give the max meds I had been given successfully for the endoscopy and those were given. Immediately though I didn't feel particularly drowsy like the endoscopy and unfortunately was quite quickly screaming in agony with the same level of pain I experienced when my gallbladder had gone gangrenous. That's saying something because I had no idea the human body could feel/process pain to that extent before passing out despite being a nurse for 15 years.

The nurse shoved the gas and air at me whilst trying to get me moving around and pressing whilst the air was put in for the scope to gain a better view. It felt like my guts were being torn apart slowly from the inside. I begged them to try and finish because I just don't think I can go through that again.

The prep hadn't completely cleaned me out but they could see enough to know there were no obvious polyps but not enough to see if there were any adhesions etc.

I've been advised it will need to be done under a general anesthesia in the future and I will need extra prep.

I'm left in agony, still with constant diarrhoea and it's now 6pm. Incredibly nauseous with awful pain from the gas.
