Hello Everyone - New to Group

Hi everyone, my hubby has been diagnosed with 5.4cm cancerous tumour on the outside of his left kidney. He will have robotic surgery either to remove tumour and 25% of kidney or tumour and whole kidney. Surgeon has said partial would be best as my hubby only 53. Anyone been through this surgery and have any words of wisdom as my hubby is in denial I think as he is saying in for surgery 2days in hospital (hopefully) then back to work I am thinking this is ridiculous he is having major surgery surely he will be tired exhausted sore and probably lots more I’ve not even thought about yet feeling so lost in information

    Hi Theresa,

Welcome to the forum. I’m sure that you will find this very useful, as you’ll be able to contact other people with first-hand experience of the same sort of cancer that your husband has. The quickest way to find them is to use the search engine on the blue banner at the top of this page. Insert your key words and click to find previous posts on this subject.

It is not unusual for someone to be in denial after diagnosis. We find that people either react like this or want to know everything that there is to know about it. If you have to look things up on the Internet please try and stick to reputable sites with reliable information. Many sites are poorly researched and sometimes give some quite scary misinformation.

I hope that all goes well with his surgery and, that his surgeon can manage to save at least ¾ of his kidney. Please let us know how he gets on. We are always here for both of you whenever you need to talk.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine Yes my hubby is the denial one and I am the one searching reputable sites for as much information as possible on what we ultimately face in the coming weeks. Many thanks for your reply and yes always proper sites no Google searching and being misled. Neil (my hubby) starts his journey soon surgeon sets before Xmas the op will be over with, sooner the better I feel and deep down Neil does too he is just more anxious of what it will entail recovery wise. Take Care T x
  • Hi Teresa and welcome!

I'm sorry to hear that your hubby has been diagnosed with a 5.4cm cancerous tumour on the outside of his left kidney but I hope all goes well with his surgery. Speaking of, there is a bit of information on our website about surgery for kidney cancer you might want to have a look. To read more, please click here.

    I hope this helps, Teresa.

  • Yes, he will be tired. Maybe a compromise would be for him to tell his employer that he will be off for X weeks (medical team will advise here) and then you tell him that he willl be able to start work sooner if he feels up to it. A lot depends on your husband's level of fitness, lack of complications during or after the operation, and what sort of work he does. Good luck! xx Harry

  • Hi Renata

i will check out some of the reading material on this site it’s good to be able to trust what your reading there is so many groups and sites that’s aren’t possibly 100% genuine. Many Thanks x

  • Harry I think this is a fab idea just to convince the hubby now. I was reading out a few stories from this group last night about how tired it makes you feel and I could see he was taking the info in. I know his work keeps him going and it’s not that I want to stop that I just want him to realise if he isn’t back at work days after the op he isn’t letting himself down, I love the bones of my man but he is and will be a terrible patient as he just has no patience for sitting around but on this occasion it is obviously highly possible he will have no say his body will have to guide him to make certain discussions. I think if we said xy weeks off work and he gets back on x he would feel better within himself, understandably it will all depend on Neil’s body and how it copes, surgeon said he’d been keen to see neil up and about next day and possibly Home 2 day health and recovery dependant of course but even the surgeon said the longer you stay in hospital you are at higher risk of infections - our aim op and Home within 48 hours I’m suggesting several weeks chill and recovery maybe a phased return to work when he is able and just take it from there. We are both determined to fight this horrid C. This group will be a godsend I’m sure.

    Kind Regards T x
