Preventative tamoxifen treatment

Hi,

Due to my high risk family history, the genetics team recommended I commence a 5 year course of tamoxifen to decrease my chances of breast cancer. When I spoke to the GP he openly said he knew nothing about this treatment and didn't know what dose to prescribe for a preventative course. He's prescribed 20mg a day, which is the same dose as I would receive if I had a cancer diagnosis I think.

Does anyone have any  experience in taking this drug preventatively? I've been on it for 3 months now, and am not being monitored.

Thanks in advance for any info!

    Hi Maes,

A warm welcome to Cancer Chat.

I personally have not heard of using Tamoxifen preventatively, but there is some discussion elsewhere on this site about it. If you go to the search engine on the blue banner at the top of this page and insert the pertinent words, you will bring up previous posts on the subject.

You might also find it helpful to ask the nurses on this site. Their number is Freephone and is:- 0808 800 4040, or you can post in the ‘Ask the Nurses’ section.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you whenever you feel like talking.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
