Adrenal cancer newbie and totally in shock

Hi I have been diagnosed with adrenal cortical carcinoma. I have had the op to remover the rumour that I was told was the size of a watermelon 10wks ago n still recoverying at home from surgery! I have done a lot of reading up on this and everything you read doesn’t give a positive or hopeful outcome. I am yet to see the oncologist as my treatment has been one big delay from finding this mass in April to having it finically removed in August!! I feel like there is not a lot of support for people going through this at all there is nothing on Macmillian sites. I am so scared of what the next stage is going to be. And if anyone can give me any sort of advice and support or even what to ask the oncologist would be grateful. Thanks.

  • Hi there .. so sorry your going through this at the moment ... it is one scary time and we’ve all been there waiting for things to happen or results ... we try to help each other through ... I’m surprised you didn’t get help from McMillan as they have a free phone number where you can chat to a trained nurse , I’ve used that number when I was first diagnosed and they were really lovely... there’s a free phone number on here too .. and they do the same .. keep trying as you will get through ...

    Hi Kasper,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I am glad that you have found us here, as you will certainly get some of the information and support you need here.

I am sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis and surgery. It is a scary time waiting for decisions on the results of tests and then deciding on treatments. You seem to have had a long wait to get everything sorted out. How is your recuperation getting on after your surgery?

Unfortunately, I cannot give you any advice about adrenal cancer. I have had two bouts of breast cancer. However, if you want to find out more about it, why not use the search engine on the blue banner, at the top of this page?  If you type in your key words, this will bring up previous posts on this subject. This is a good way of introducing yourself to others who have gone through what you are going through at present and may give you some of the answers you are seeking.

It is always a good idea to take someone along with you to your consultations. Do you have a close family member or friend who could help you to make up a list of questions for your consultant? It can be helpful to have a list with you to ensure that you do not forget to ask important questions. My hubby comes along with me armed with a duplicate of my list and he writes down the answers whilst I am talking to my consultant. It has been proven that we only remember a very small percentage of the conversation in a consultation, so it is very helpful to have it all down in black and white. Many of us do this, so you don't have to worry about what your consultant thinks. They will have experienced this several times before.

Have you been given an appointment to see the oncologist yet? I do hope that it won't be long before you do.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. There is always someone here for you, whenever you want to talk.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Kasper24, and a very warm welcome to Cancer Chat.

I'm sorry to hear about your adrenal cortical carcinoma diagnosis, and hope you're manging to rest up after surgery.

I just wanted to follow-up on what Chriss said about giving our nurse team a call if you'd like to talk about any of the worries you have. They're just a phone call away, on freephone: 0808 800 4040 (Mon - Fri, 9am to 5pm).

There's also ACC Support UK, a UK-based charity that focuses on adrenal cancer. They've got lots of support information on their website, offer free counselling services, and have a specialist nurse helpline too (0800 434 6476).

I do hope that this is of some help and that you're able to talk to someone soon.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Helen

  • Hello Helen

i am in total shock I am apparently quiet young to have this very rare cancer and everywhere you look on the internet doesn’t fill you with hope. I am hopefully seeing the top professor tomorrow and will have some of my answers tomorrow. I can not thank you enough for replying and for all the others that have replies to me I am grateful. I have my good and bad days and my family don’t seem to understand what is going on. So I am trying to protect them as much as possible as well as staying strong for myself. Which is really hard.

    Thanks. Kate
