Where do I go from here with my GIST?

Hello all.

I was diagnosed a year ago with a GIST, which turned out to be several sites in the small bowel/appendix/sigmoid colon. Once they discovered it/them, it was resected, apparently completely. The scan I had last week (after severl throughout the ensuing year) showed a recurrence. Only in one place (from the four sites it had grabbed initially). The consultant suggested a wait, rescan in three months and review policy. I cannot but agree with that, as it is only small, these things tend to be slow to increase in size, despite me having one of the odd variants that doesn't take well to imatinib. I've had no therapy in the past year, and would prefer not to start now - well, after the next scan in early December. I keep myself relativley fit (am 72 and a taiji/qigong teacher) and wonder what it will feel like when the consultant eventually tells me that there is no more they can do.

I realise that may be a long way away (or it may be next year), but getting prepared is the sort of thing I like to do.

That's where I'm at. I'd be happy to talk to anyone in a similar position, or who has gone past this point. I'm not exactly worried, just not feeling the need to panic at this point.

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat, moscowtel.

I'm sorry to hear that you were diagnosed with a GIST a year ago and that the latest scan showed a recurrence. On the positive side, it is good that you are able to keep yourself from panicking at this point and are preparing for the future.

Hopefully, some of our members will be along shortly to share their experiences or ask for advice, but until then feel free to join the conversations on the forum. Everyone here is very friendly and I'm sure they will be happy to chat with you.

    Wishing all the best,
