Another Worried Patient

Hi Forum,

When I woke up this morning I didn't think my day would end on chat forum.

I'm a loving partner who has been at his partner's side everyday for the last few months. She started getting irregular heavy bleeding which was put down to perimenopause initially. It didn't stop but got worse & has required transfusions.

Today was supposed to be her 1st pap smear. She is 40 & has always put it off. A bleeding lesion was found in or on her cervix so a biopsy was taken. She is being kept in hospital while they try & stop the bleeding.

We know we have a very anxious wait on the results. I don't know what to say or do to any of this as I'd never thought about anything like this. I'm hiding this from our son until we know something concrete.

I'd love to be able to be convincing when I tell her it's going to be OK but at present I'm finding it hard not to break down in front of her. I know many people in this forum or visitors who have read the stories all have their own stories that are similar or worse or better but it's great to know a forum like this exists where people can talk about it.

  • Hi Jolamine,

This has been investigated by myself, a solicitor & several other people. She can't get PIP as it hasn't been 3 months yet, unknown if it's life threatening until January to trigger the 9 month point & is still employed. I can't get Carer's Allowance as I earn more than £116 a week after tax & don't spend 35 hours a week caring for her.

In another 8 weeks I can trigger her salary continuance insurance which will help. Until then our emergency fund will cover us.

The hospital has perscribed some more nausea meds which are stronger so hopefully they will have an effect soon. She has spoken with a dietitian though who has provided a lot of information on what she should eat so that might help as well.

    Thanks

    Kermit

    Hi Kermit,

I am glad to hear that your partner's meds have been changed and I hope that they prove to be more effective than the last lot were. Here's hoping that the advice from the dietician proves to be helpful too.

I am glad to hear that her salary continuance insurance will kick in in 8 weeks.

Sorry to hear that you had no joy with PIP or Carer's allowance, but don't forget to try again when her 3 months are up.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine

  • I don't know if this helps but I use both Aloxi and Atavan for anti-nausa in my IV the day of treatment and then afterwards I use ginger, peppermint and legal hemp oil. Also it helps me to eat small carbohydrate meals throughout the day. Chemo causes nausia for several reasons but one is it is killing off the lining in your gut, I found by eating a small amount of plain yogurt every day it helps with this along with the other things. Hope this helps from one cervical cancer patient to the the other! I wish her well on this journey. Talla
  • Well they have changed her meds yet again so might help but highly unlikely. On a plus side half the chemo treatments have been completed. Brachytherapy starts in about 3 weeks as well & all treatment should be completed by end of October. Regards, Kermit

    Hi Kermit,

Sorry to hear that your partner is still having problems with her meds, but hope that the new ones are better . I'm sure that you are both looking forward to the end of October, when all treatment should be finished.

    Thinking of you both.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  •  Hi kermit,  you both will be so looking forward to the end of October , im sure in the end they will find the correct meds that will work. Hoping you are looking after yourself as much as you can.  Wishing the best for your wife and hope this treatment gets rid of the cancer , which im sure it will. Take care Barbara.

  • Hi all,

The meds have changed again. Now it's either chlorpromazine or compazine. It's designed for schizophrenia but is very good for chemotherapy nausea. It's a daily tablet taken the day before, the day of & the following two days after treatment. Other than that she is on mild nausea medication.

Three chemotherapy sessions done & 3 left. Still have 3 brachytherapy treatments starting October 9th which she isn't looking forward to.

She is feeling quite tired & drained though now after all the treatment so far so hopefully it doesn't get any worse.

She will be happy when she is finished though as I need to sort out my own health & am unable to do so at present.

    Thanks all,

    Kermit

    Hi Kermit,

This sounds more positive.Stage 1 or 2 is about as good as it gets. It is good to have some positive news to give your son tomorrow.

I hope that all goes well with the Radiotherapist on Monday'

This is the problem with your own business, there are always things to do , no matter what crops up in your life. Hope you get your employees all sorted out so that you can organise time off.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine

  • Well it turns out she is bleeding again. Apparently it started a week ago & only mentioned it yesterday to a nurse who told her to monitor for a few days. It's now heavier & no treatments until Monday so unable to tell the specialists or doctors.

She only thought to tell me today though.

Not really sure what to do now.

    Hi Kermit,

Not good news - and it would get heavier as you enter the weekend. If things don't settle you may have to either call the emergency doctor out over the weekend, or take your partner to A & E.

I hope that things settle down overnight and that she can manage to wait until Monday.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
