Another Worried Patient

Hi Forum,

When I woke up this morning I didn't think my day would end on chat forum.

I'm a loving partner who has been at his partner's side everyday for the last few months. She started getting irregular heavy bleeding which was put down to perimenopause initially. It didn't stop but got worse & has required transfusions.

Today was supposed to be her 1st pap smear. She is 40 & has always put it off. A bleeding lesion was found in or on her cervix so a biopsy was taken. She is being kept in hospital while they try & stop the bleeding.

We know we have a very anxious wait on the results. I don't know what to say or do to any of this as I'd never thought about anything like this. I'm hiding this from our son until we know something concrete.

I'd love to be able to be convincing when I tell her it's going to be OK but at present I'm finding it hard not to break down in front of her. I know many people in this forum or visitors who have read the stories all have their own stories that are similar or worse or better but it's great to know a forum like this exists where people can talk about it.

  •  Hi, im pleased that the bleeding has turned out to be  nothing and she is now as you say producing her own blood at the moment, they are all good signs at the moment. And every good sign is a step to another good sign or outcome. I imagine you will be annoying her or yourself, , its because you love her and want it to turn out all good and also the stress of it all.  Heres hoping the chemo  and radiation isnt to hard on her, but im sure with your support and the family, she will get throught it,  Take care Barbara.

  • They have decided to install a PICC (Peripherally inserted central catheter). They have used the same vein & arm each time for weeks now so is bruised & is in pain everytime they try to attach a new needle. She has blood tests every week the day before chemotherapy as well so this can be used for everything. Her sister will advise how to keep clean & check dressings over it to stop infection. Well treatment started yesterday. Chemotherapy took about 4 hours & radiation about an hour. She has been given anti-nausea meds if required which will cause her to sleep but so far hasn't needed them. They have prescribed tranexamic acid again to help with the bleeding as it will be several days before it stops completely. Luckily we have been provided with a schedule that will be updated with the next week appointments to make life easier. We're all in good spirits so far due to starting treatment & no side effects as yet. I'll update next week once we reach the week mark or before if any changes. Thank you all, Kermit
  • I have been living with cervical cancer for twenty-three years.  I too went through a bleeding episode with my tumor and almost died from it but am still here after all this time.  Mine never went into complete remission and all except the last year I have lived a high quality of life.  I was misdiagnosed for over ten years so my tumor got away from everybody.  Radation was hard but it shrunk the tumor so well it didn't grow back in the same place and stayed small for almost nine years!  Anything I can do to help our answer questions I am happy to help!  Also there are alot of people who go into full remission from this and it never comes back, especially Stage One or Stage Two, I was a rare one where it never quite went away!

    Hi Kermit,

I am glad to hear that it is a case of 'so far, so good' and hope that things keep moving in the right direction..

I shall look forward to next weeks's update.

    Thinking of you all.

  • Luckily the bleeding tumour was caught when it was as for the last few months all GPs & specialists had stated menstrual issues. I think the 2nd transfusion within a week may have helped prompt the surgury & the fact they are only able to perform a pap smear under general anesthetic.

But the bleeding appears to have stopped last night or this morning but had been tapering off since treatment started. So she no no longer has to take transemic acid. That gives us hope that the therapy is slowly working.

It's just the long wait until January until the next PEt-CT scan & MRI to determine if it is gone or what the next treatment will be if required.

  • Hi Jolamine

We're now onto session 3 of radiotherapy & had the 1st chemotherapy last Thursday. I think it's going to be a long schedule though.

My partner gets nauseous easily. Since Thursday she has had nausea 24/7. The nausea meds they have provided don't seem to be helping. This has also been accompanied by a complete loss of appetite so forcing her to eat food is becoming tiresome already. Her energy levels are good but due to the nausea she doen't want to do anything.

Hoping that she has now stops the transemic acid she might feel a little better. It may have been conflicting with the nexium medication she is taking. That was perscribed due to perceived stomach issues which turned out to be her gallbladder a few months ago. So that has been removed with no complications in July (whilst all the bleeding was going on) & all follow-ups have been good.

Might be time to get her checked out though to see if she can stop some meds that may not be required. Other than that she has 1 med she isn't allowed to stop taking as it's depression related.

I'm doing my best to ensure everything is done, working so all bills are paid & trying to cope on little sleep.. What savings we have will be wiped out once treatment is completed & she rests before heading back to work. So for now the personal stress isn't too great but I'll reassess in 4 weeks when we're out of money.

As mentioned above her bleeding has stopped so I'm less stressed about that as well. The PICC is driving her insane as it's not allowed to get wet & she has stated it's very uncomfortable. So her spirits are still there when she isn't complaining of the nausea :-)

I'll update agin later this week after the 2nd chemotherapy.

    King Regards.

    Hi Kermit,

I’m sure that you are both mightily relieved that the bleeding has stopped. It’s not so good about the nausea though. Have you asked her chemo team if there are other anti-nausea drugs which might be more effective? I had to try a few before I found one that worked for me.

Financial problems are common with cancer. My hospital has a service run by McMillan, which gives financial advice. There are some payments which can be paid without being means tested, for example, you might qualify for Carer’s allowance now that she is home again. Would she qualify for PIP – also has no means testing. If you cannot source help in the hospital, try your Citizens’ Advice Bureau,

    Kind Regards,

  • Hi all,

Well it's week 2. Chemo done yesterday & still daily radiation. Her nausea is just as bad & they are trying to adjust the meds to help that. It's the radiation that is causing the nausea though. Also due to the bleeding & chemo her red blood cells were down so another transfusion was completed yesterday. Her iron levels are up though.

We've had a few minor arguments due to her being emotional & me being stressed (still have my own physical issues I'm trying to fix). I'm unable to find relief at the moment as can't run or workout.

Financially I've looked at everything & we can't get any assistance as I'm not classified as a primary carer due to having to work & having alternatives. I've crunched numbers though & can stretch savings for a few months.

As my friends are all finding out I'm slowly getting vmy own support network which will help.

All up things are progressing & we'll get through it. It's still the initial adjustment & I guess when we have that sorted the treatment will be over.

I'll update in another week or maybe less.

    Thanks all for the support.

    Hi Kermit,

As far as I know, you can still be a carer and work. Your partner may also qualify for PPI (Personal Independence Allowance). You won’t know whether you are entitled to anything until you look into this seriously. It is well worth looking into things properly.

I’m sorry to hear that the nausea still continues and hope that she gets more effective medication soon.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
