Lump in neck

Hi all,

i am new to this so find my way around.  I haven't been diagnosed with Cancer but I have got a lump that's concerning in my neck and find it difficult to swallow.  It feels like I have something stuck in my throats constantly.  Today I went to my Ultra Sound appointment thinking I had a swollen thyroid which was pressing on my windpipe but I was wrong.  At my appointment the sonographoer said my thyroid was fine but there was something under it and she didn't know what it was.  She is sending me for a CT Scan.  I've got to admit it's got me worried now.

Has as anyone out there been through the same and can ease my fears a bit or help me prepare for what I may hear?

    Hi Smillie,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I am sorry to hear that your ultrasound has thrown up more for you to worry about. Hopefully, the CT scan will shed light on what the real problem is.

I cannot help you with this type of cancer. I have had two bouts of primary breast cancer. The first was 7 years ago and the second the following year. I thought that I was prepared for the news, as I had found both lumps myself. However, the truth was that I went into a real 'tissy' after being told. I guess what I'm saying is that none of us are ever fully prepared.

The only advice I can give is to stay away from the internet and distract yourself by keeping busy. If you want to talk to others who have been through similar problems to yours why not do a search? This way you will find previous posts on the topic. You will find the search engine on the left hand side of the blue band at the top of this page.

I sincerely hope that it is not bad news when it comes, but that they can make it easier for you to eat. Please keep in touch and let us know. There is always someone here whenever you want to talk.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hello, was it attached to the thyroid gland? It could be a nodule, a cyst? did they say if it was solid of fluid filled? Obviously fluid filled is better then a solid mass. I hope you get your results back quickly and that all turns out to be ok. All the best xxxx

  • Hi, she didn't say. All she said was there was something there and she didn't know what it was so sending for CT to have a better look.
  • Thank you for your kind reply.  I suppose I'll just have to wait it out and I'll keep you posted when my appointment comes x

  • going through this right now... i thought it was my thyroid as i have hypothyroidism but no its something else also.. i was coughing up blood last year it has stopped im worried too... i have to have fine needle aspiration and ultrasound on 5th sep

  • Sorry your going through this too.  I'm not sure what needle aspiration is, but the ultra sound couldn't tell much, just that it was there.  One question I do have though, has anyone been feeling sick at all over a period of time but not actually being sick?  I've had a sick feeling on and off for a couple of months, a bit like morning sickness if that makes sense!

  • I had a swollen lymph node right under my jawline. It turned out to be SCC on my tonsil. I had surgery to remove tonsil and surrounding tissue along w 20 lymph nodes where 2 of them were compromised with cancer. The shell of either was broken. Good news.  Now I am starting radiation. 33 visits total.

  • Hi Buck42

hope your getting on ok? I was diagnosed with right tonsil cancer on 22/11/17. Similar to you had a lump on the right side of my neck etc which led to diagnosis.

i am seeing the consultant and hopefully the oncologist on the 7/12/17 to discuss a treatment plan. They have already suggested a radical neck dissection and 60 sessions of radiotherapy Monday to Friday!  Have they discussed chemo with you as a option?

  • I had robotic surgery July 19th to remove the stage 3 tonsil tumor then 7 weeks (33 sessions) of radiation starting August 21. I was told protocol of these 2 gives a 92%+ prognosis if HPV derived. I think if people skip surgery then the protocol is chemo and radiation. I did not have chemo. I have 2 friends who did not have surgery and they had chemo and radiation, worked all the way through it and lost a lot of weight because it is tough to eat. The radiation disintegrated their tonsils so they did not need surgery. I do not think radiation on its own is too tough but combined with chemo it is difficult. I lost about 13 pounds is all. One guy had a tough case of an intertwined tumor around arteries and the other guy was nervous so he wanted the whole regiment. I was at UCLA. The surgery is tough for about 10-14 days. My radiation symptoms fluctuated. Some naseau. Metallic taste. Tough to swallow. Some thickened saliva. All would come and go. To me the worst was the metallic taste and most prevalent.
