All new to us

Hi, my husband was diagnosed 18th April following routine screening, he coped well initially until he was told he needed a stoma, his surgery was 5 weeks ago , and we see the consultant on Wednesday, to find out what next histology reports showed dukes A T2,

my husband is so depressed and is suffering from extreme exhaustion,   I don't know if their is such a thing as " is this normal "

in general we are both feeling very low

  • I think once you have a diagnosis everything is taken out of your hands, you feel out of control, which I think brings on depression, which makes you totally exhausted in mind and body, nothing is the same as we have always known it,waiting for results etc, I am the same at the moment, can totally sympathise with you and hubby, but I wish you all the best for wed.take each day as it comes, much love christine x
  • You have both been through a lot, so it's no surprise that you feel so low.  It is normal to feel exhausted during cancer treatment. Depression can also accompany such a diagnosis. Your husband's care team or GP can prescribe some medication for this if needed.

I hope that all goes well when he gets his results tomorrow.I

    Kind regards

  • Hi Sweetcheeks,

In our World there is no such thing as normal. We all react differently as we are all as different in so many ways. No diagnoses are exactly the same and we all have different bodies and personalities forged from different life experiences. Different things set us back as individuals, I was pretty cool when told I might be dead in a few weeks, but I was ridiculously worried about some of the minor effects. Luckily I was one of the lucky ones who had an unusually better than "normal" outcome. I still worry constantly knowing that I could relapse at any time but the worry is manageable. Somehow we humans somehow find resilience during hard times.

Jipster and Jolamine are both right in how this situation can affect us. We all fear the unknown and until Wednesday's results you will both be living with a huge unknown which is inevitably unsettling.

    Good luck for tomorrow.

    Dave
