just diagnosed

Hi, diagnosed with small bowel cancer, 1st June, had CT scan Tuesday 13th. What next? the waiting is terrible, it's like only half your brain is working, half is trying to analyse what you've been told without any further information.

  • Hi Gordon,

Have a chat with your Oncologist or named nurse - if you don't yet have either you should be given one soon. Try not to Google until you know exactly what you are dealing with and then only look to trustworthy sites like CRUK or MacMillan for information. There is so much misinformation and out of date advice and statistics out there that it is easy to become disheartened. If you have already scared yourself by reading survival statistics - bear in mind that here are net figures based on literally thousands of patients and cannot be used to predict what might happen to an individual as there are too many variables.

My own cancer care pathway went: Endoscopy and biopsies - CT scan - Multi-Disciplinary Team Meeting (where diagnosis/next steps were discussed by the clinicians - Meeting with Surgeon who referred me to my Oncologist - meeting with Oncologist - started Chemo.

From CT scan to starting treatment was about two weeks ... the longest two weeks of my life. The timescales vary depending on the complexity of a case. Mine was relatively simple as surgery, immunotherapy and radio-therapy were ruled out.

    Good luck

    Dave

  • Hi I'm francesca 9 weeks of being ill going doctors ultra sound found spots on liver then  ct found spots on liver them MRI found breast liver and spine cancer . Taken biopsy and waiting waiting and waiting head has gone into over drive and totally shouldn't have googled anything .. not being given any information or seen an oncologist or cancer nurse not knowing .....

  • Yes, I agree, waiting like being in a half way house, can't plan anything, I'm seeing oncologist (I think) I mean I don't know what this person's position is, on 23rd, so at least I'll have something to worry over

Good luck, I wish you well.

  • Yes, from CT scan to seeing oncologist, around 2 weeks, (23rd June 2017) that is the worst, but it's really strange, it seems to be preoccupying half my mind, almost subliminaly, making me oddly bad tempered, less tolerant of trivia? Anyway, thanks for your kind words, and ever onwards and upwards.
