Hi , my mum has suspected upper colon cancer with a possible spread to her lung. Mum is 87. Last year she had a mastectomy to remove a breast cancer tumour. She is tired most of the time and her mobility is slow and careful. Mum is fairly fit though she is light in weight through weight loss over the last year. Mum is convinced the only way she would be cured is by surgery but she is scared of the risks. Mum looks to me for advice. I'm an only child that lives with her and works from home a couple of days a week or whenever I'm needed. Mum has a colonoscopy this Wednesday to finalise the diagnosis. My question is, presuming it can be removed by surgery and if mum passes a pre-op, how risky will the surgery be at her age? I have a mate who's dad died within four days of pancreatic surgery. My mates brother is a consultant who says is 50/50 for over 75s. Is it really that risky?? It's so scary and I am worried stiff, I cry a lot and I know mum would freak away out if that's really the case. Does anyone have any views or experience?
