Dad resistant to chemotherapy stage IV

Hi all,

I'm new to this group but I was hoping you could help me out if anyone knows more about chemotherapy than I do. My dad (in his mid 50s) was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in December. At first he was optimistic and thought it was the early stages, then we found out it was Stage III and after surgery before chemo we found out it had spread to his bones.

After surgery he had an infection and wasn't able to start chemo when he was meant to. Finally they checked him in and put him on an antibiotic drip (oral antibiotics hadn't worked.) He started chemo and apparently it was working well but I just found out they changed his chemo drug about 3 weeks ago because he developed resistance.

I don't know much about this and I can't speak to the doctors because I am on my year abroad studying modern languages. I don't think my family is that honest with me, or even the doctors (they like to be optimistic, they say it is better for recovery). I don't know if I should be worried about this resistance. I read that if you're resistant to one drug you're more likely to be resistant to more. But I couldn't find that much information about it.

I know that bone metastasis means it is a very advanced stage (I had to find that out myself though - is it terminal??) but my dad looks completely fine and I feel very confused about whether I should be worried and how long I should expect him to live.

If anyone can tell me more I would be so thankful! I've been feeling very confused and I have to make a lot of choices right now

  • Welcome to the forum cabcn although I'm sorry to hear about your dad and for the reason you are posting.

I can't imagine how tough this situation must be for you at the moment but it's great you're trying to find out as much as you can to get a better understanding of what your dad is going through. I've had a quick look around our website and found some information about colorectal cancer (also known as bowel cancer) here as well as treatment for it, including chemotherapy, here. I would recommend making another post in the ask the nurses section of the forum as they will be able to answer some of the more technical questions you've mentioned here and explain how resistance works in more detail.

    Kind regards,
