12 month CT scan results after Stage 3 Rectal Cancer

I was diagnosed with stage 3 rectal cancer in July 2015 aged 33, I had 6 weeks chemoradiotherapy, APR surgery with permanent colostomy and 6 months post operative chemo, I had a scan in October 2016 that was clear, last blood test was in February 2017 and colonoscopy in march 2017 was also clear. However, I had a CT scan on Friday and recieved a call today to say my surgeon wants to see me on Thursday morning to discuss the results, my anxiety has gone through the roof and I am worried sick. I have been doing great, feeling well, putting on weight, the only thing is a nagging ache in my lower back I'm scared it has come back. Should I be worried or is this normal routine to ring to ask me to go in?

  • Hello Sazc81,

    Welcome to Cancer Chat.

I'm sorry to hear you are experiencing pain in your lower back and I can appreciate why you are so anxious given what you went through recently, but try not to worry too much until you hear more from your surgeon.

If I read this correctly, your appointment is scheduled for today, right? Once you find out more, if you have a minute, please come back and let us know what your surgeon said, we’ll be thinking of you.

    Wishing you the best,

    Renata, Cancer Chat Moderator

  • It is normal to discuss CT scan results in person, whether or not the news is good or bad. I have had at least a dozen CT scans and have never had my results given to me in any way except face to face.

This should have been explained to you at your last appointment with your consultant, to stop you worrying unnecessarily.

    Best wishes

    Dave

  • It's been a long time! How are you doing?

My husband is going through similar situation you had initially, just wondered how you are doing...
