Hi, everyone.
My mother was diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma about a month ago. It's a rare form of cancer that is even more rare in adults. At first, the doctors thought it was just a tumor on her pelvic bone, but now it spread to her liver and lungs.
Last night, my mom went to the ER and my dad warned me that she might not be strong enough for treatment and it could be the end. I was in a panic all night, but this morning got the call that she would go into emergency surgery.
I'm not sure what the next steps are. I think the treatment is palliative, not a cure. I'm still learning how to cope with the diagnosis . My dad also had cancer 2 years ago, but it was an early stage and easy to cure. I can't believe everything progressed so fast with Mom when she was just diagnosed in February. It's even harder dealing with a rare cancer because the doctors don't know enough to give much of a prognosis. If anyone else has dealt with adult rhabdo, please message me.
I'm a young professional and live a few states away. I'm hopefully flying up to help later this week, but won't be able to stay for the entire length of treatment. At least there are a lot of friends and family helping out.
PS: I know this is a UK forum and the research and nurses help won't apply to someone from the USA, but a lot of the other forums I found seemed very inactive.
