Hi Everybody

I live in the Derbyshire dales I started to have abnormal bleeding last October went to my Dr who did internal said nothing abnormal following another bleed again Dr who diagnosed kidney infection then urinary tract infection then cystitis. If I had listened and not kept insisting something was wrong l would still be sitting at home. Went to another Dr who sent me to gynaecological dept. Scanned biopsy followed by MRI revealed endometrial cancer three weeks ago had total hysterectomy visited specialist last week who told me there was no way they could see from scan but I now have stage two cervical cancer and am facing 5 weeks of intense radiotherapy followed by 3 of internal rods. Can anyone tell me please about rods as l cannot start treatment tell my other ok has healed and not due to see specialist tell 29th.is rods just once per week and what happens.thankyou

    I am one of the nurses and Lucie our moderator wondered if we might be able to answer your question.

    Internal radiotherapy (brachytherapy) is used to treat cancer of the cervix (neck of the womb). Giving the radiotherapy from the inside allows a high dose of radiation to be directed to the cervix without it passing through the surrounding tissue. Internal radiotherapy is given through an applicator ( rod) which is placed inside the vagina. The treatment is given after you have finished your external beam radiotherapy.You usually have between 2 to 4 treatments and you can read more about this by clicking here  and here.
