Newbie !

Hello all, I'm Sean, just starting a course of oral chemo and radiotherapy to shrink a rectal tumour prior to surgery.

constantly waiting on the very long list of side effects of capecitabine hitting me, but none so far, although it is only day 5!

feeling fine, no symptoms, still golfing and trying to do so daily, however the mention of aspergillus has put the frighteners on me and it seems almost every sheet of advice I have received contradicts each other.....plus, my youngest lad is an active rugby player and the thought of missing his training sessions and games isn't fantastic !

However, I am an optimist, I'm being so well looked after by the fantastic NHS and my family.

  • Hi Sean

Hope your chemo works wonders and not too many side effects.

I'm on treatment for advanced bowel cancer at present with a future hope that surgery may be an option. My side effects have been minimal so far. I'm on a different chemo to you.

I don't know if you have come across the "beating bowel cancer forum" Google it. You will find many people on there who are on  the same chemo as you and will have had the same surgery.  They really are a very experienced and friendly bunch. I find it extremely helpful.

    Good luck Hayley x

  • Hi Sean,

Welcome to the forum. Good news that you're not experiencing the worst of the capecitibane side effects - my advice would be to keep things as normal as you can for as long as you can. Steer clear of anyone with cold or flu though!

    Cheers

    Dave

  • Thanks Hayley, will definitely google it. Finding the chats on here really helpful, especially in realising that I'm not alone!
  • Thanks Dave.

i think you can read too much into the caution element of the side effects. One of the nurses at hospital put me right today and she reiterated staying away from people with colds and coughs too. Not something I've historically had to worry about as I've always been fairly luck in not catching them, but it seems a change of thinking is definitely needed :-)

     cheers
