Terminal ear cancer

my father has an ear cancer which started growing within the ear canal and has been diagnosed as terminal, it is rare I am told but is there anyone who has any information on this ? Dad has dementia so surgery is not an option and we have been informed that surgery may not be successful, what can we expect ?

  • Welcome to the forum Reid although I'm sorry to hear about your father's diagnosis of ear cancer.

I'm just popping by as I have found some information on our website about cancer of the ear canal which I thought may be of interest to you. If you'd like to have a read just click here.

If you have any further questions about what to expect I would recommend giving our cancer nurses a call next week as they may be able to give you some insight. Their number is 0808 800 4040, which is free to call from a UK landline, and they are available Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

I hope you get to meet other members who have had this diagnosis soon Reid but in the meantime feel free to use the 'search forum' option above to find previous discussions about this as well.

    Best wishes to you both,

  • Hello Joyce,

I did a little search around the forum for you and found a couple of past discussion threads which may be of interest to you.

Quite recently, about a month ago, we had a member, [@Pudong]‍ who posted on the forum to share his/her brother's ear cancer story - he was also diagnosed with stage 4 ear cancer. You can read the full story here and don't hesitate to respond to it if you wish. I am sure you two would have a lot to say to one another.

[@Newquaychick]‍ also posted a few months ago to share her mum's story. Her mum was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma of the ear. I am not sure whether this is the same type of ear cancer as your father's but you can find her forum thread here and share your own experience with her.

I hope this helps a little and that you can soon connect with some of our other members who are affected by ear cancer.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi I realise your post is a few years old and have no wish to bring up something that will upset you, but my father is going through the same thing, he has had his whole ear removed but has now been told the tumour has returned and it has spread, he was to have radiotherapy but on finding the cancer had spread this was cancelled. He is going to see the doctor tomorrow but has been told the treatment options are limited. I wonder if you could give me an idea of what may be coming his way, so that I might plan how to help him. Thanks

  • I am so sorry to hear about your father, unfortunately I am unable to give you any more insight to this as my father died in 2018,he was suffering from alzheimer's as well and while spending a week in a respite home he became very disoriented and had to be hospitalised and then developed delirium,he was given palliative care and pain management as we suspect he was in pain from his ear cancer,he died 3 weeks later,a blessing as he did not understand what was happening with his ear, sorry this doesn't help,it's an awful situation for you but get as much support from the palliative care people as you can and don't be afraid to ask for help and advice.

    Kind regards
