Double mastectomy and reconstruction

I would just like to say Hello.

I had double mastectomy and reconstruction straight away using the muscles from my back. And I was woundering if any body has gone throught the same thing and may have a chat.

  • Hi, there. I think I will have to do the same thing. I am  still waiting for the results from the genetic test. Could you tell me a little bit how it was ???

    Thank you.

     Kind regards,

      Diana.

  • Hi

Im interested to find out how your operation went?

I had a right mastectomy but had to have delayed reconstruction due to my treatment.

Ive met with the team and am waiting for my second appt now.My only option is the back muscle.

It seems a massive op and i am worried about jow i will cope with 3 children and if there is back weakness.

    Thanks

  • sorry for the delay Diana

I had it in April last year  had both Breast taken off and used my  back muscle . My operation was long and due to having a haematoma in my left breast had to go back to thearter. Was quiet poorly  stayed in Hospital for a week Healing was a issue for myself  on both breast had to have a vac pack on Left side has not healing very well it took until september for them to heal I cannot wipe my bottom very well has I cannot get my arm round  that was the right side had 4 lymp nodes taken out before Breasts taken off. I am still having physio due to the  problems I am having. I get upset and I am in pain I dont know if this is normal But I just keep hope it will get better soon.

    Hi Tracy,

I had a lumpectomy in 2010 and a double mastectomy for another primary the following year. I didn't have a reconstruction because, due to a previous gall bladder operation my back was the only option. The surgeon was not keen to start any reconstruction until he was sure that I wasn't going to have any further regrowth .The surgeon told me that he would then have to take the two flaps from my back separately, which would have made it a lengthy process.

After everything had healed up I found that I could cope adequately with a prosthesis and decided not to bother with any more surgery.

I too had difficulty in reaching my bottom. Initially I got a long handled apparatus which helped. Later I had my bathroom refitted and installed a Clos-O-Mat toilet, which is supposed to wash and dry me after using the loo. Unfortunately, it doesn't dry very well.

Are you happy that you opted for reconstruction at the time of surgery?

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • In looking back at this I wish I had chosen just the double Mastectomy and waited for reconstruction has have had so many issue . I am in pain with my back and struggle with my personnel care,I have tried the apparatus which you talked about have thought about the toilet but has of yet not got one. I am going to make an appointment with my breast care Nurse to see what else can be done.
