Mums lung cancer diagnosis - what's next?

hi there

We have just had the devestating news that mum has lung cancer and although they can treat it they can't cure it. She's due an operation to remove the rumour in a few weeks and it hasnt spread anywhere apart from potentially the lymph nodes.

She had anal cancer about 4 years ago and got better from that, but they said this one is different. I guess I just don't understand why this can't be cured.

she had a cough for a couple of months and was tired and loosing wait and that's how they found the tumour.

im incredibly close to my mum, she is only 54 and they have mentioned 5 years but they aren't sure.

im just really confused right now and don't know what's to expect, it's a lot to get head round. Will she be ill the whole time, do they just keep giving her treatment until she's too tired and it stops working?

im so devastated thinking of mum having to go through this all again.

Any advice appreciated

thanks xx

  • Hi,

so sorry to hear about your mum, I completely understand your heartache as I lost my dad 20 years ago to lung cancer and recently lost my mum to pancreatic cancer. Everyone is so different so I don't think you should try to compare your mums cancer to anybody else's. She may respond brilliantly to treatment and be able to lead a good life for a few months or even years- who knows. My advise would be to take each day as it comes, ask professionals lots of questions and focus on the positives as best you can. You'll run yourself into the ground trying to predict what might be, just enjoy her on the good days, and be there for her on the bad days.

Try to stay strong lovely, you still have your mum here for now so embrace every moment, make memories and treasure your time together.
