Hello

Hello I'm new to this forum and thought it could help to talk to others in a similar situation.

I am 17 years old, for all of my life my mum has had various cancers in her abdomen, it didn't interfere too much with out lives and I was used to hopstials due to my severely disabled brother often visiting them. However while I was doing my GCSEs my father had bowel cancer and my mum was found to have a blood clot on her brain, fortunately my fathers cancer has cleared up but the bleed on my mums brain although dissolved led to extra blood going to the tumours which has exacerbated their growth. Due to mums health she cannot have them surgically removed and so this means my time with her has been shortened to a matter of (hopefully) years but maybe less.

Apart from that I am trying to achieve my a-levels and live a normal life as possible although this is proving very difficult albeit manageable as long as I keep calm.

  • Hiya Rob = wow what a story!! I really feel for you and your whole family. Certainly no one can study while stressed. So, you must find learning skills = there are some courses on Coursera on how to learn - equally some handy videos on youtube. Like for example combining studying with exercise.

However, on top of this you have to care for yr bruv and also yr parents - so this takes time. Take a deep breath and say all is possible.

Look after yrself = I also enjoy an active studying life = I am learning German and also run study sessions for post graduate opticians.

Brighteyes BSc hons post graduate cert clinical optometry

  • Thank you for your response, this sort of response really gives me hope. I'll have a look at those videos, I was lucky enough to receive an unconditional offer from Plymouth University so am lucky in that respect. I'll try my best to look after myself but it feels impossible to put myself first in this situation. Thank you this response has genuinely made my day

  • Yea cheers Rob = Coursrea is great BTW = look up HOW TO STUDY and a free of chane course from University of Chicago will pop up. She is amazing and taught me how to study. How to mix exercise with study - all the best tips. Its only a short course. Focus yr study on making the family proud of yr achievement. Well done in getting into Plymouth = promise me that you will learn to sail while you are there. Sailing is Plymouth Sound is the best and great fun!!

Let me know how it goes and If I can offer any more.

I recall asking one of my tutors when I studied neurology = who their best student was = It turned out to be a girl living in in very difficult circumtances in Afganistan =it is a war zone ans being a girl she couldn't go out. So she did it all by internet = her essays and homework was far above everyone else.

    Well done.
