Waiting for lumpectomy

I'm 70 - although I find that hard to believe!  Having a lumpectomy next Friday. Sentinal node dye injection and guide wire insertion on Thursday. 2 lumps, and there's quite a strong chance I may need a mastectomy, but trying to avoid it if possible. I have felt very cool about it all but now keep getting soreness, aches and pains around boobs, especially in bed. Hoping it's mostly psychological.

I'd like advice about what to buy and how to prepare - I've ordered some bras. Heard mention of a cushion to help sleeping and various oils.  Thank you.

  • I did not do any preparation for the lumpectomy.  A lumpectomy is nothing more than a biopsy. They just take out a bit more. My surgeon took out 5 millemiters of normal tissue surrounding the tumor to ensure there were no cancer cells floating around.  I had a sentinal node biopsy as well. Recent results from studies indicate it is not necessary to take out more than 2 lympnodes.  I hope that is all they are taking out.   Again, it is a small, thin inscision. I was absolutely fine after the procedures and did not require any pain medication. I also felt all kinds of pains after diagnosis.  I believe it was phychological as i did not experience any pain until they diagnosed me.

  • I would not compare a biopsy to that of a lumpectomy.  A biopsy takes various small pieces of tissue to examine. If a lumpectomy is required then there is a margin of tissue removed around the mass to ensure clear margins. It also depends on the size of the mass and where it is situated in the breast.

I would suggest that you ask your breast care nurses for advice on bra etc and sleeping supports. I found a soft bra and a small pillow to support my arm helpful as the lump in my breast was near the cusp and close to my armpit. As I say nursing staff will support you.

i remember being advised by the surgeon and oncologist not to use anything other than that recommended by them.   If you need a mastectomy again you will be advised by medical staff. Two lumps suggest you may well need a mastectomy but medical staff will make decisions in need. Take care WA
