Preventative mastectomy.

Hi there

Just looking to see if there is anyone else in the same boat as me. I had a preventative mastectomy in august 2015, due to a high risk of familial breast cancer. We have 8 cases of BC in the family including 1 male relative. Genetics calculated our risk to be high and gave us the opportunity to remove both breasts as precaution. Our family does not possess the identified brca genes.

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat Amanda.

I'm sorry to hear that breast cancer has had such a big impact on your family and about the situation it placed you in. I think a few members here have been in a similar situation and I hope you get to meet some of them soon but in the meantime feel free to use the 'search forum' option above to find previous discussions on this subject and chat to others on their threads as well.

    Kind Regards,

  • Hi Amanda I also had family history of breast cancer, but do not have a very large family. My mum had BC and passed away at 27, my maternal nan also had BC in her 60's. My GP referred me to Oxford for genetic testing which they refused as not enough cancer in the family!! However in the meantime I too had BC, they then decided to see me. I don't have the BRCA gene but my genetic councellor did other tests and found I have the CHEK2 gene mutation which is not as well known as the BRCA. I had 2 breast tumours, so opted for a double mastectomy with recon, thankfully I didn't need any radio or chemo, just on Tamoxifen now for 10 years. Can I ask where you had your genetic testing done? Please ask if I can help with anything, best wishes Erica
