Sleep problems

Hello ive just started chemo last Tuesday to treat oesophagus cancer , does anyone else feel very anxious to the point where sleep is impossible ? I feel exhausted but cant sleep .

  • Hi, I didn't go through chemo but had surgery to my mouth and neck for tongue cancer and still have problems sleeping at times but during my radiotherapy I spoke to my local Macmillan centre and they offered complimentary therapy for patients. I had reflexology and it really helped. I was sceptical at first but it really did help me to relax even to the point where I fell asleep during some of them! We have a couple of local charities over similar services so if you check your local area you might be able to find something similar. You'll never get rid of all the anxiety but it honestly does help.

  • Hi Hully,

I suffered from insomnia for well over a year and ended up seeing my GP about it. The meds I'm on are just enough to take the edge off the anxiety and help me get off to sleep. I've always been a night owl though, hence replying to your message at just after midnight!

What chemo are you on? I was on EOX for my OC.

    Best wishes

    Dave

  • I started eox chemotherapy last wed for 3 sessions before surgery to remove most of my stomach. I can't sleep either I read or play games on my phone until I eventually drop off. Hope you have been ok my main problem has been severe sickness put down to the steroids by the hospital now I've stopped those I'm feeling a bit better lost 5lb in 3 days so I need to get eating but no appetite. I have bought a relaxation CD which I'm going to try out. Hope it improves for you
  • Hi ABC,

All I could eat for a day or so after each EOX infusion were home made power shakes, smoothies and home made soups. Oh and chocolate.

I reversed the logic I use when trying to lose weight while trying to stop the weight loss and while on chemo had full fat milk and mixed grated cheese into mashed potatoes etc.

    Good luck

    Dave

  • Thanks for the advice. I have not even fancied chocolates despite having boxes bought for me by family and friends the milkshake I could perhaps fancy might pop see if my son has a carton in their now. Soup is a no no at moment as that's all I was eating when had sickness so bad memories thanks again Angela

  • I must admit that thickshakes always remind me of being on chemo now, so I tend to avoid them! My taste buds were affected so things I usually liked tasted foul or the entire time I was on chemo. Luckily  my taste returned to normal after a few weeks off chemo.

  • That's good to hear ! I'll hang on to the chocs then  although highly unlikely in this house.

    welcome to the forum

i had 6 weeks of Tomotherapy with weekly 8 hour sessions of chemo

in my first two week I felt slight changes but nothing drastic

in my third week this all changed the tiredness slowly crept in .... you will sleep enough towards the end of this process and for me that continued for about 3 months after.....all I did was sleep a few weeks after my treatment had finished.

before my treatment I was an in bed by 12 midnight and awake by 6:30 even at weekends. I am now 2 + years out of treatment, I sleep like a baby and have not seen 6:30 am for a long time

we all go through this treatment differently but none of us are super human, you will sleep don't worry about that now

how are you doing with your treatment anyway ... well so far I hope

shout if you have any questions
